Overall Responsibility:
Operate landfill equipment, scales, and office. Coordinate landfill operation.
Potential error with possible impact over the entire department
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Operate landfill equipment
Move solid waste
Cover specified toxic waste materials
Cover landfill waste
Put out landfill fires
Answer questions regarding where to dump particular types of waste
Determine when to move the landfill materials
Handle money following established safe-keeping procedures
Account for daily cash-flow
Perform related activities as required
Daily interaction with the public
Pick up fly-trash at landfill site and dumpster locations in Scofield
Other related job duties as assigned
Skills and Attributes:
Mostly routine issues involving the landfill but periodically some complex issues regarding toxic waste and other hazardous materials
Policies regarding landfill operation are broad but clear
Must be able to work independently with supervisor available for assistance when needed
(Supervisor is located off landfill site)
Experience Requirement:
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
Requires two (2) years road/heavy and light equipment operation experience
Ability to work with public in a courteous manner
Physical Effort/Environment:
Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information
Average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to operate machinery
Work is often performed on or around heavy equipment
Frequent exposure to heat and cold
Work is physical and involves heavy lifting
Exposure to hazardous waste and other hazardous materials
