Landfill - Laborer

Reports To: Landfill Director

Job Status: Full time
Travel Required: frequent County travel

Work Schedule: M-F varied Sat. 30 minute lunch
Rare after-hours work in emergencies only

Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Landfill Foreman, the Laborer performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in maintaining the landfill facility. The employee in this position performs manual tasks and operates various tools and light equipment in the performance duties.

Essential Function Statement(s)

  • Operate light-duty trucks with and without a trailer;
  • Operate mowers, grinders, welders, tire cutters, and other types of light equipment;
  • Clear litter from ditches, right of ways, and grounds;
  • Maintain landfill buildings and grounds;
  • Perform or assist with mechanical duties when necessary;
  • Perform light maintenance and service work in connection with the operation of related equipment;
  • Assist the public in locating areas to dispose of waste and process citizen transactions.
  • Operate scales and complete fee tickets for incoming loads;
  • Assist in answering public inquiries and telephone calls;
  • Make arithmetic calculations of medium complexity;
  • Calculate and return correct change after payment by cash customers;
  • Assist with janitorial duties – sweeping, mopping, and waxing floors. Cleaning office, bathrooms, and break room;

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work with equipment crews as needed;
  • Other related duties as necessary or required.

Position qualifications


Competency Statement(s)

  • Able to work legally in the United States;
  • Operate a motor vehicle according to Kansas State law;
  • Pass a post-offer health assessment and drug test.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Experience: This is an entry-level position. The employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills within six months to one year in the position.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required.

Skills: Knowledge of mechanics maintenance, welding, hazardous waste, and solid waste containment and disposal. The employee must have the ability to operate all light equipment, and shop equipment. Must communicate effectively with others using the spoken word and proper writing style.

Problem Solving: Limited problem solving exists in this position. Recognition of work hazards and personal safety problem solving should be utilized.

Decision Making: Decision-making exists in this position. Determines problems at the landfill and causes of malfunctions in equipment and decides the most appropriate action to be taken.

Accountability: The employee is not responsible for budgetary control and does not assist in the preparation of the annual departmental budget.

Supervision: Supervision is provided and job-related decisions are reviewed by the landfill director. The employee does not have supervisory responsibility for subordinate personnel.

Personal Relations: Occasional contact with county departments and frequent contact with the general public.

Working Conditions: Job performance involves physical effort and manual labor. Extreme weather conditions and toxic fumes are factors in this position. Ability to lift heavy objects.
