We have a Mechanic position opening at our Salton City Landfill:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Work to maintain landfill equipment in sound operational condition with Safety as the First priority. The Mechanic duties will include but be limited to the following:

  • Complete all paperwork and repair orders as required
  • Schedule, maintain, and service all landfill equipment and fleet trucks as directed
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections
  • Electrical troubleshooting
  • Brakes system repair
  • Tire maintenance
  • Major diesel engine repair
  • Air conditioning system repair
  • Hydraulic system repair
  • Perform welding tasks of metal objects by means of arc welding
  • Order parts and supplies. Perform required documentation and recordkeeping
  • Assist management in the purchase of new equipment and supplies
  • Work closely with operators. Ensure repairs promote employee safety
  • Perform any other yard-related/operational tasks as directed by the supervisor


KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals
  • Attends training classes to upgrade skills as the nature and complexity of vehicles change
  • Works closely with equipment operators and site supervisors to determine repair requirements as documented on trip reports
  • Follows through to ensure that repair has been effective for the operators
  • Knowledge of job site safety, potential job hazards, and state and local regulations that govern landfill operations
  • Must have a valid Class “B” California Commercial Driver’s License, required with tanker endorsements and with no airbrake or automatic transmission restriction, preferred
  • Must meet all proficiency requirements outlined for the position
  • Most necessary tools will be provided by the Company, but having own tools is a plus.
  • Performs any other duties assigned by the Site Supervisor, which from time to time may include the duties and responsibilities of scale attendant, load-checker, laborer, and/or fueler/oiler.


PHYSICAL:

  • This job requires that the individual walk, sit, stand, stoop, lift, climb, and move heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to work effectively outdoors and under extreme seasonal weather conditions.
  • Potential hazards include exposure to dust, wind, and sun, as well as the potential for chemical exposure from illegal disposal of hazardous waste or improper handling of materials. Also, the possibility of being hit by flying debris, the possibility of stepping on or being cut by sharp objects, and exposure to loud noise.


SAFETY EQUIPMENT:

  • Must have and use company required safety equipment
    • Required: Hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses/goggles, work boots with steel inserts, earplugs, dust mask, gloves. Optional: support belt.
