Position: Lakota Immersion Classroom Teacher

 

Position Overview:

 

The Lakota Immersion Teacher is responsible for the academic, social and psychological growth

 

of students in the classroom at Oglala Lakota County School District. Through the Language

 

Immersion Model and the Second-Language Acquisition Model, the Lakota Immersion Teacher

 

will focus on increasing student learning and Lakota language fluency by developing all lesson

 

plans and classroom activities in Lakota and speaking and teaching all subjects in Lakota, as well

 

as collaborating with school personnel, parents and community agencies to provide a quality

 

instructional program and perform other duties directly related to this position description.

 

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:

 

SD Teaching Certificate required.

 

Previous early education experience preferred.

 

Must be competent in conversation (both written and spoken).

 

Must understand and be committed to Language Immersion Models and Second-Language

 

Acquisition.

 

Is familiar with and is willing to acquire knowledge of Language Immersion Models and

 

curriculum.

 

Desire and drive to learn and grow as an educator and in language fluency.

 

Knowledge of Lakota culture, traditional stories, and Lakota songs preferred.

 

Excellent communication and relationship building skills that will create system of success

 

for students, parents/care-givers, co-workers, and classroom.

 

Organized, able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.

 

Ability to assist in day-to-day operations in classroom as needed, to include teaching, lesson

 

planning, conducting student assessments, classroom management, parent communication,

 

and other day-to-day activities as needed for position and classroom success.

 

Reports to:

 

Lakota Language Director and Principals of the school.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

Utilize Lakota in all student communication, committing to using no English whatsoever

 

within classroom. Any conversations, phone calls, communication with parents, etc. that

 

require the use of any English must be conducted away from the children's hearing.

 

Working with students, maintaining an enthusiastic, and patient demeanor.

 

Teaching and assisting in classroom management with high level of energy and

 

commitment to increasing Lakota language fluency and proficiency in all subjects.

 

Fully committed to the success of the Lakota Language Immersion classroom and

 

students and the Mission Statement of the Oglala Lakota County School District.

 

Assist in lesson planning and execution, creating and implementing a variety of teaching

 

techniques in order to meet student learning style preferences.

 

Assist in completing student assessments, creating and implementing development plans

 

for individual students as needed.

 

Evaluates academic and social growth of students, keep appropriate records, prepare

 

progress reports, and communicate progress with parents.

 

When students communicate, kindly but consistently, steer them towards using Lakota

 

instead of English in the context of the classroom/school.

 

Working collaboratively with other educators/teachers, co-workers, and school staff to

 

ensure the immersion classroom success.

 

Keep classroom tidy, clean, and organized.

 

Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education

 

activities provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth activities

 

specific to Language Immersion and second-language acquisition.

 

Follow Oglala Lakota County School District educational guidelines and policies that

 

support student learning.

 

Plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants and other paraprofessionals.

 

Shall perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

 

Terms of Employment:

 

Salary and work year will be established by the Oglala Lakota County School Board.

 

Evaluation:

 

The Lakota Studies Director and Building Principal will evaluate the performance of the Lakota

 

Immersion Teacher in accordance with district policy and appropriate program guidelines.

 

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: All employees in contact with children must submit

 

to and pass the required criminal background check and drug test.
