Summary

Assists in the development, organization and activities of the lactation service program for inpatients and outpatients. Assists in the coordination of the lactation program with other team members and acts as a resource person. Assists in the coordination of in-service education and community education. Participates in coordination of community events and conferences. Demonstrates clinical expertise, professional judgment and knowledge of the breast-feeding dyad. Involved in providing education and support to breast-feeding mothers and their families prenatally, post-partum and outpatient and hospitalized breast feeding infants or lactating women. Provides documentation, implementation modalities and communication concerning the breast-feeding dyad for the physician and nursing staff. Acts as a consultant and researcher for the nursing staff, physicians, and breast-feeding dyad. Provides breast-feeding care and evaluation to women of reproductive age, lactating women and their breast-feeding offspring, ages newborn through the toddler and possibly pre-school years. Participates in outreach programs as needed and/or requested.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in performance improvement through monitoring and evaluation activities when it concerns Lactation education, training, and reporting.
  • Participates in the development and presentation of in-service programs and training of staff. Conducts formal programs on particular aspects of the clinical specialty based on data from needs surveys, observation of staff skills needs and requests from appropriate sources.
  • Actively participates in staff development by providing orientation to new staff and by assisting in the training of other LACTATION CONSULTANTs and lactation educators. Assists in the development, review and/or update of standards through use of new information or identifies new areas of standards development.
  • Actively participates in the lactation consultation program/breast feeding center by responding to the needs of inpatients and outpatients through patient rounds, outpatient visits, and providing phone consultation to breast feeding families. Provides service to patients as needed in timely manner.
  • Maintains personal competency and attends educational program as outlined in IBLCE standards and guidelines. Shares educational information and materials with other members of the health care team.
  • Demonstrates competency and professionalism with patients through effective communication, appropriate assessment, and thorough follow up, as evidenced by positive client, physician and nursing staff feedback and outcome data.
  • Maintains effective communication and relationships with employees, other departments, physicians and the community by addressing concerns, taking appropriate action and conducting meetings as needed.
  • Consistently acts as a role model for breast-feeding advocacy by seeking greater knowledge, teaching/practicing the 10 steps, educating employees, patients, families and the community and consistently upholding the standards of the International Board of Lactation Consultants.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required


  • Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Nevada
  • Graduate from an accredited lactation educator program
  • Current International Board of Lactation Consultant Certification
  • Obtains NRP certification within the first 180 days of hire and maintains thereafter
