Job Title: Laboratory Technician
Location: Monroeville, PA
Duration: 06 months on w2
Time: Monday-Friday 7:00 am-3:30 pm(Occasional OT during the week as needed)
Main Activities/Duties/Responsibilities:
This position will support Optical Monomers Research and Development activities through trials of developmental and commercial lens material chemistries in pilot scale lens-manufacturing lab.
The technician will be responsible for:
• Operating an automatic mold-assembling machine to prepare lens-forming mold cavities.
• Performing examination of ophthalmic lenses by conducting cosmetic inspections and various dimension measurements.
• Managing mold inventory and maintaining a system of mold traceability.
• Performing mold washing process and maintaining the washing line in optimal conditions.
• Dispensing chemicals from up to 55-Gallon drums into smaller containers.
• Filling up forms, labeling containers and preparing chemicals for shipping.
• Handling organic peroxides.
• Preparing mixtures of monomers following standard operating procedures.
• Pre-treating polymer samples and submitting them for physical properties testing.
• Chemical cleaning of a 10-L reactor and mold filling rig.
• Conducting spectral and color measurements of liquid monomers and optical polymers.
• Reporting results in electronic lab notebook with accurate data and detailed description of observations.
Education and Experience:
Minimum qualifications include:
• Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related, PLUS at least 6 months of experience working as a technician or similar in a Chemical laboratory or Chemical Plant or similar.
OR
• Certified Technologist in Chemistry or holding a Chemical Laboratory Technician degree plus 1 year experience working in a chemical laboratory environment, as a technician in a chemical plant or in supporting R&D as a technician.
OR
• High school education plus a minimal of 3 years’ experience working in a chemical laboratory environment or as a technician in a chemical plant or in supporting R&D as a technician.
Preferred experience:
• Maintaining a laboratory notebook.
• Working with 5s system.
• Documenting procedures and work instructions.
Required Functional and Technical Skills:
• Handling chemicals, operating chemical processing equipment in lab or industrial scale.
• Basic-level proficiency in MS Excel.
• Multi-tasking.
• Fundamental understanding of the scientific method.
• Basic knowledge of chemistry and physics principles.
• Strong time management and organization skills.
• Extreme attention to detail.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
• Ability to work hands on in the lab and outside of the lab.
• Demonstrated flexibility and versatility in managing work responsibilities.
