Job description

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO

  • Obtain blood specimens from patients and employees through venipuncture, finger stick, heel stick, and arterial blood gas collections using established laboratory procedures.
  • Process and handle blood, urine, stool and other body fluid specimens.
  • Provide care for the infant, pediatric, young adult, adult or geriatric patient.
  • Ensure specimen integrity through proper technique, specimen storage, and handling; pre analytical phase according to established written procedures including test ordering, receiving and processing specimen, forwarding specimens to referral laboratories, following quality guidelines and problem documentation.
  • Properly initials, dates and records blood collection time at proper collection times including timed, Stat and routine collections.
  • Perform phlebotomy on nursing home, house call, and wellness patients.
  • Order and receive tests into Laboratory Information System.
  • Ensure excellent delivery of customer service to all laboratory customers through quick, efficient and thorough responses to requests for services or information.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and positive attitude with all members of the healthcare team, families and patients to include properly explaining test and procedure.
  • Keep phlebotomy area, drawing trays and nursing units neat, clean and well stocked with supplies.
  • Meets lab service goals as scheduled or report problems to director.
  • Ensures that: data entry of patient demographic, insurance information, diagnoses and laboratory test orders provided by clients are accurately entered into the laboratory computer systems.
  • Ensures accurate specimen identification by labeling patient specimens with computer generated labels.
  • Ensures correct coding and billing by communicating with medical providers for diagnostic information or clarification of orders.
  • Ensures timely and accurate billing by generating the interface log of incomplete billing transactions, manually posting billing charges or credits, and performing billing corrections on clinic or hospital bills.
  • Ensures client and customer satisfaction through: quick, efficient, and thorough responses to requests for services or information regardless of route (phone, fax, email, courier, in person, pneumatic tube, etc.); owning the request until resolution or another person accepts ownership.
  • Ensures the overall quality and safety of laboratory processes through: active participation in performance and quality improvement activities; adhering to all laboratory policies and procedures; maintaining competency in all job functions and responsibilities; continuing education in areas of responsibility.
  • Provide specimen collection instructions to patients.
  • Reviews physician standing orders and other orders on a periodic basis.
  • Take personal payments or credit card payments for laboratory testing.
  • Serve as an information help-desk and coordinate delivery company pickups.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES  

  • Strong computer skills (mouse, keyboard, internet).
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, insurance and medical billing practices.
  • Ability to learn and use new information technology.
  • Operate laboratory vehicles.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills, and the ability to work quickly and accurately when under strict deadlines.
  • Good communication skills; oral, written, electronic
  • Ability to work independently and as member of a team.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable safety, quality control and specimen handling guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient and/or employee information to assure patient and/or employee rights are protected.

 

EDUCATION

  • Minimum Education: High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and graduate of an accredited phlebotomy training facility or equivalent experience.

 

EXPERIENCE 

  • Minimum Experience: Phlebotomy training program clinical rotation. Preferred Experience: 1 year.

 

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE

  • Certificate from an accredited phlebotomy training facility or proof of equivalent training; valid Driver’s License.
