Accessioning of samples:
- Data Entry
- Identifying problems with specimen types, missing information and assigning the issue to the appropriate ancillary department or in some cases resolving them.
- This is a multi-discipline position with 3 primary components: specimen accessioning, sample splitting/sorting and data entry. Prepares Laboratory Specimens for designated departments/locations prior to laboratory analysis and testing and routes specimens by type to various staging areas.
- Performs all paperwork, technical and non-technical procedures required to process and submit specimens. Assigns specific computer generated identification numbers, checks for accuracy and records all items processed.
- Operates data entry terminals and automated data systems, follows standard sequences/coding when entering data and corrects, edits, and/or verifies data entered into automated systems.
Summary of Position: The Accessioner is responsible for proper handling and processing of incoming Laboratory Specimens for analyzing in the Lab.
Responsibilities and Duties
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Receives specimens from clients for processing
- Verifies all specimens that come in are labeled appropriately and that they match the labels on the requisition to ensure that there are no issues with patient identity and reporting
- Prepares specimens received for testing in reference laboratory
- Enters patient demographics into the electronic medical record
- Reviews and Accessions specimens and testing orders for laboratory analysis
- Assists technologists and technicians with the operation of standard laboratory instruments
- Perform routine laboratory assistant duties according to agency standards and protocols
- Perform specimen or reception check, and records information into LIS~Z
- Performs proper storage of specimens after testing and properly discard according to SOPM
- Cleans work area, and surrounding laboratory after completion of work day
- Requisition Review and restock department daily
Qualifications and Skills
- High School Diploma
- 1 year experience working in a similar role
- Must have excellent data entry skills
- Understanding of Laboratory quality control and assurance preferred
Knowledge of general laboratory safety issues and universal precautions
- Prior Phlebotomy or Accessioning Experience
- Medical terminology and laboratory testing requirements, including the ability to differentiate different test tube types
- Data entry skills
1 year experience in laboratory accessioning required'
