Job description

The lab specialist will perform whole animal (rodent) experiments involving surgery on the brain and long-term outcomes. Procedures include the implantation of EEG electrodes, video EEG monitoring and MRI scans as well as postmortem tissue examination. After standardizing the procedures with the principal investigator, the specialist will perform the procedures independently. The investigators will be blinded to the identity of the subjects, so the specialist will need to keep accurate records of which group each animal is assigned to be able to assign the results to the proper experimental group. The specialist will monitor laboratory supplies and place orders as needed to maintain them. Good organizational skills are needed to time the sequence of experiments accurately so that the most efficient use of the resources is maintained.

Job Description:

Perform assigned experiments.

Collect and maintain data accurately and securely. Upload data to public data base as required.

Consult with principal investigator about best way to analyze data.

Schedule experiments to allow for a smooth flow of experimental subjects through the protocol steps.

Review with principal investigator the primary data to assure a consistency of analysis over the course of the study.

Oversee day to day laboratory operation.

Maintain blinding of data until experiment is completed.

Order laboratory supplies and animals to assure consistent supplies.

Supervise and train new laboratory members.

Preferred Requirements:

Experience collecting and analyzing scientific data and working with animals in the laboratory is necessary. Preference is given to applicants with a science-based bachelor’s degree and previous experience with animal survival surgery as well as brain imaging and image analysis.

Physical Demands:

This position involves rodent handling, fine manipulation of equipment for surgery and creation of experimental devices, obtaining and analyzing images and EEG, and animal surgery. Fine manual dexterity and visual skills.

This position will remain open until filled. This is an Exempt level, benefited position. This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
