Job description

Position Information
Provide technical safety office and field support for those handling hazardous, biological, radiological, and universal waste materials, to include duties such as periodic inspections, providing training, and serving as liaison to those handling these materials. Will also assist in response to chemical materials handling issues, i.e., spill response.
Responsibilities:
Laboratory Inspections
  • Conduct regular inspections of all regulated waste storage areas at NDSU to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, maintain records, report violations, and conduct follow-up inspections.
  • Spot check chemical inventories to assist in maintaining accuracy of identity and quantity of chemicals on campus.
  • Ensure emergency contact and other informative door signs are kept up to date.
  • General safety inspections in chemical, engineering, and biological lab spaces as needed.

Safety Awareness and Training
  • Develop, update, and deliver campus-wide hazardous waste and chemical safety training.
  • Conduct lab specific consultations on waste management and safe lab practices.
  • Be alert to unsafe lab situations or behavior and be willing to encourage a positive safety culture.

Environmental Health and Safety Program Support
  • Assist Safety Office Personnel in hazardous materials handling, transport, and disposal.
  • Perform the duties of the Hazardous Materials Technician for hazmat handling, transport, and disposal in the absence of the technician.
  • Perform emergency response for any hazardous materials incident (spill, exposure, etc…).
  • Other duties as assigned to this area of responsibility.

Work Schedule:
Five days per week, 40 hours per week. Emergency responses or extraordinary events may entail being called upon occasionally after normal working hours or on weekends.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology or other natural science.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of chemistry, biology, and hazardous materials programs.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with no more than three moving violations in the last two years.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a 40-hour HAZWOPER training within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
  • Ability to use technical equipment associated with areas of responsibility of the position.
  • Ability to research new technologies and their related safety issues.
  • Must be able to pass a fit-test for respirator usage.
  • Demonstrated excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree or two years of directly related experience in a full-time capacity or equivalent
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NDSU campus and facilities.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite of applications, especially Outlook and Excel

Physical Demands:
Must frequently be able to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, climb stairs, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, taste and smell, and be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Advertised Salary:
$56,000 - $62,000/year depending on experience
