Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLT)

Job Summary:
The MLT is a professional member of the laboratory staff who works efficiently to perform all laboratory procedures (Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Microbiology, Serology, Urinalysis, and Immunohematology) producing quality results in a timely manner. MLT will perform quality control and review for acceptability. The MLT may also perform maintenance tasks, venipuncture, and solve problems under critical time constraints.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, which may include analytical equipment maintenance, function checks and documentation thereof. Other pre-analytic duties include supply stocking, specimen quality assessment, specimen processing, quality control and calibration performance, and other pre-analytical activities as assigned.
- Performs all analytical procedures efficiently and accurately, according to established Jackson Laboratory policies and procedures. Participates in proficiency testing, consistently maintaining acceptable scores of 80% or higher.
- Performs post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, reporting results (including abnormal and critical results) in accordance with established procedures. Provides and acts on technical and support information related to the elements of laboratory testing for all age groups, neonatal through geriatric patients.
- Exercises professional judgment in evaluation, specimen integrity, result accuracy and inter-result validity and takes corrective action as necessary. Such corrective action shall include specimen rejection, recollection, and/or retesting using the same or alternate methods and/or utilizes other skills associated with the practice of clinical laboratory science to ensure validity and accuracy of testing at all times taking care not to compromise patient care with excessive rejections, recollections or delays. If in their judgment a specimen is compromised, the technologist shall include an appropriate disclaimer statement in the report indicating the potential compromised nature of the result and why.
- Is capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify a supervisor or director.
- Provides orientation and training to new employees and students as needed, under the direction of the lab leadership. Appropriately documents orientation and training of new employees and medical technology students.
- Responsible to back-up the phlebotomy team, performing phlebotomy on pediatric, infant, adults and geriatric patients as required to maintain efficient workflow.
- Responsible for knowing how to handle computer downtime.
- Assists phlebotomy team with ordering, processing, retrieving reports, and resulting of send out testing.
- Performs other clinical or clerical duties, appropriate for their position, licensure and/or job description, as assigned by supervision.
· Maintains a clean and organized work area. Properly disposes of waste and disinfects work area daily in keeping with OSHA guidelines. Makes sure counters are left clean and free of clutter.
· Follows all safety and OSHA guidelines with regard to personal protective equipment in the performance of duties (wears gloves when handling specimens, properly disposes of sharps, ect).
· Contributes to positive work environment to include working toward continues quality improvement, improving efficiency, and reducing errors to an acceptable level.

- Employee performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s/department/s Ethics and Compliance
program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate
supervisor, or, upward through the chain of command, the Compliance Office or hospital hotline.
- Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual educational requirements.
- Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized time clock correctly.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
- Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
- Displays courteous professional manner towards patient, co-workers, nursing and medical staff.
- Maintains standards of professional society procedures and ethical behavior.
- Maintains hospital requirements, policies and standards on confidentiality.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the
department.
Educational/Regulatory Requirements:
- Associate degree obtained from an accredited program in Medical Laboratory Technology.
- Technician licensure in the State of Florida in all five clinical areas: Microbiology, Serology/Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Immunohematology.
- MLT ASCP Certified (Generalist)
Language Skills:
· Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
· Additional languages preferred.
· Strong written and verbal skills.
Skills:
· Basic computer knowledge.

Pay: $19.97 - $43.65 per hour
