GENERAL SUMMARY
The Medical Laboratory Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising
laboratory operations. Also conducts and interprets complex microbiological tests .
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Conducts purchasing, budget tracking, and inventory management for the laboratory.
- Manages activities of assigned staff. Oversees or conducts training and new team member orientations. Manages workload and scheduling. Responds to grievances of patients as well as team member-related issues. Handles performance management issues and participates in hiring.
- Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed. Oversees quality assurance procedures. Ensures adequate safety and compliance with standard operating procedures. Requests new equipment as needed and develops new laboratory procedures.
- Measures and monitors key performance areas of the laboratory. Recommends ways to promote continuous quality improvement, customer service, and team member satisfaction.
- Disposes of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines.
- Maintains strictest confidentiality.
- Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals. and competent in the areas of embedding, microtomy, grossing, special stains, and immunohistochemistry.
- Adherence to CAP (College of American Pathologists), CLIA (Clinica Laboratory Improvement Amendments), State Regulations, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability), Safety and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Regulations
- Participates in educational activities.
- Act as team player: collaborate, communicate clearly, and cooperate? team members with focus on mission and goals.
- Enhances communications by consistently displaying excellent customer service skills in behavior and attitude.
- Performs other position related duties as assigned.
Laboratory Oversight:
- Provide leadership and strategic direction for the anatomic pathology and molecular pathology laboratories.
- Supervise histology specimen processing, cytologic analysis, and FISH analysis of urine specimens in the anatomic pathology laboratory.
- Oversee PCR analysis in the molecular pathology laboratory.
- Ensure all laboratory operations adhere to quality standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
Team Management:
- Responsible for overseeing safety and security of laboratory facilities including maintaining current knowledge of all relevant protocols, regulations, standards, and safety procedures as well as developing and maintaining standard operating procedures.
- Lead a team of laboratory technicians, providing guidance, training, and mentorship to ensure optimal performance and professional growth.
- Foster a collaborative and positive work environment that promotes effective teamwork and communication.
- Develop work schedule to provide appropriate coverage and support to the departments.
- Responsible for completing Employees Performance Appraisals and documentation of any remedial or correction actions taken.
Clinical Expertise:
- Utilize specialized knowledge in clinical pathology to provide diagnostic insights, consultation, and expertise to fellow clinicians.
- Monitor laboratory performance metrics, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Stay current with advancements in genitourinary pathology, and laboratory management to drive continuous enhancement of laboratory operations.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Navigate and maintain CLIA and Medicare certifications, ensuring all laboratory practices meet or exceed regulatory standards.
- Oversee proficiency testing, quality control, and quality assurance programs to guarantee accurate and reliable results.
- Maintain updated SOPs and make changes as required.
- Keep abreast of accrediting agency regulations and updates.
Expansion Initiatives:
- Identify opportunities for expanding service lines within the laboratories and drive initiatives for the introduction of new testing methodologies or technologies.
- Collaborate with leadership to develop and execute strategic plans to enhance laboratory services and improve patient care.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
- Collaborate with urologists, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless integration of laboratory services into patient care pathways.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities, results, and quality assurance measures.
- Generate and deliver comprehensive reports as required by internal and external stakeholders.
- Responsible for ordering supplies and maintaining sufficient inventory.
- License and certification as required by state.
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in microbiology, medical terminology, or health sciences required.
- Minimum of four years’ experience in progressively responsible positions in laboratory, including two years of supervisory experience.
