Job description

The Laboratory Evaluation Specialist (LES) inspects clinical laboratories to determine compliance with the regulatory requirements of CLIA 88 (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988) outlined in the federal regulations at 42 CFR Part 493. The State Agency (SA) holds a contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to inspect laboratories located in Michigan subject to the requirements of CLIA 88. The inspections include evaluation of direction, supervision, proficiency testing, quality assurance, quality control, patient test management, and other criteria addressed in the regulations. The LES conducts inspections of clinical laboratories and evaluates the laboratory implementation of the CLIA requirements to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. The LES must use professional and scientific judgment when enforcing the regulatory requirements. This position is assigned a geographical region and serves as the recognized resource for that region. This position serves the following regions: Northern Lower Peninsula, Central Michigan, and Southeastern Michigan. This position may inspect laboratories in other regions as needed to meet federal workload requirements.

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in medical technology, microbiology, biochemistry, or a related field involving chemical, or biological laboratory procedures.
Experience

Laboratory Evaluation Specialist 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Laboratory Evaluation Specialist 10
One year of professional experience providing Laboratory Evaluation services equivalent to a Laboratory Evaluation Specialist 9.

Laboratory Evaluation Specialist P11
Two years of professional experience providing Laboratory Evaluation services equivalent to a Laboratory Evaluation Specialist, including one year equivalent to a Laboratory Evaluation Specialist 10.

Laboratory Evaluation Specialist 12
Three years of professional experience providing Laboratory Evaluation services equivalent to a Laboratory Evaluation Specialist, including one year equivalent to a Laboratory Evaluation Specialist P11.

Laboratory Evaluation Specialist 10
Two years of full-time, professional, clinical laboratory experience in two or more specialties which include chemistry, clinical cytogenetics, diagnostic immunology, hematology, histocompatibility, microbiology, pathology, or radiobioassay may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Laboratory Evaluation Specialist P11
Four years of full-time, professional, clinical laboratory experience in two or more specialties which include chemistry, clinical cytogenetics, diagnostic immunology, hematology, histocompatibility, microbiology, pathology, or radiobioassay may be substituted for the experience requirement.

NOTE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
