Position Title:

Laboratory Educator and Instrument Coordinator

Position Summary:

The Laboratory Educator and Instrument Coordinator will collaborate with faculty in developing and implementing laboratory components of Chemistry courses. They will also have primary responsibility for teaching laboratory sections in general chemistry and/or organic chemistry and coordinating laboratory preparation in the introductory laboratories each semester.
The Laboratory Educator and Instrument Coordinator will work in collaboration with the other Laboratory Educators to will serve the students and the department by providing consistent and dedicated staffing for the teaching labs, which are integral to the curricular goals of the department. This position also includes instrumentation duties. As Instrument Coordinator, the person will develop and implement procedures and policies for an effective laboratory support system; and, maintain and operate the department’s growing inventory of instruments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

During the academic year the Lab Educator/ Instrument Coordinator will:

  • Teaches up to two introductory (general or organic chemistry) lab sections per semester. The labs range from three-four hours each. The contact time in the labs will be balanced against other responsibilities. Lab instruction may be online, face-to-face and hybrid instruction;
  • Grades student assignments and maintain grade book;
  • Stays abreast of current issues and developments in laboratory chemical education;
  • Acquires all materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for running all sections of the labs, including making sure that all supplies and equipment are working or up to date weekly;
  • Maintains, organizes, restocks and cleans the chemistry teaching laboratory spaces daily;
  • Orders laboratories supplies for chemistry laboratory courses before the beginning of each semester and as needed;
  • Provides teaching support for the Organic and General Chemistry laboratories;
  • Takes inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment at the end of each semester;
  • Prepares chemical reagents and stock solutions and set up introductory and advanced laboratories;
  • Removes equipment and reagents after the completion of the experiments for each lab section;
  • Maintains the department’s chemical inventory database;
  • Maintains instruments and coordinate equipment maintenance schedules;
  • Trains new users on instruments, and assist faculty with the use of instrumentation relevant to the Organic Chemistry laboratories including the gas chromatographer, infrared spectrometer and the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer;
  • Suggests additional use of instruments in research and teaching;
  • Orders parts, supplies, and services related to instruments and act as point of contact for vendors;
  • Develops logs and schedules for the use of instruments as needed;
  • Be responsible for the safe use of and other safety concerns related to instruments.

During the summer the Laboratory Educator and Instrument Coordinator will:
  • Develops and tests new lab activities in collaboration with faculty;
  • Trains new users on instruments, and assist faculty with the use of instrumentation;
  • Inventory, repairs, and upgrades laboratory equipment and computers in preparation for the coming academic year (in coordination with laboratory/Instrument Coordinator);
  • Restocks supplies and chemicals and dispose of outdated materials;
  • Assists faculty with our summer high school CHEM*RXNS program (ACS Project SEED);
  • Teaches up to one laboratory course in general or organic chemistry, if the course is offered.

DIMENSIONSThis position has the indirect accountability of the Operating Budget of ~$75,000 (supplies and Instrument maintenance) and the Payroll Budget of $5,000 (hiring teaching assistants).Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in a Physical Science (Chemistry/Biochemistry/Organic preferred) and three years of related experience required.
Must possess a broad-base knowledge of instrumentation such as NMR, UV-VIS, FTIR, HPLC, LCMS, GCMS; chemical solutions preparation, storage and chemical waste management. Additionally, must be able to work under time constraints and work with a diverse population. Experience teaching laboratories, supervising students, teaching assistants is a plus.
Good oral communication skills are required when interacting with faculty, teaching assistants, and work-study students. Incumbent must have excellent interpersonal, organizational skills; and the ability to handle situations with diplomacy.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have excellent writing skills with the ability to prepare laboratory materials and reports. Must have the ability to effectively present information in groups and one-on-one. This position requires the ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, and the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
The work of this position requires intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point). Incumbent may be required to process basic letters, memos, e-mails, and formal business correspondence; handle such things as mail merges, flyers, spreadsheets containing formulas, creating forms, creating brochures, tables, and newsletters. In addition, the individual should have knowledge of chemical drawing software.

Master’s degree in chemistry/Biochemistry/Organic preferred

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: sit, stand, walk, talk, reach with hands and arms; and use hands to prepare experiments, handle lab equipment, and to operate computer. The employee is frequently required to: smell. The employee is occasionally required to: climb or balance, and lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this job include the ability to adjust focus as necessary.
