Job description

The Blood BankAssistant Section Leader performs and evaluates complex laboratory tests in the Blood Bank.  It requires operation and understanding of complex precision instruments and manual immunohematologic techniques. They act as a technical resource for Medical, Nursing and Laboratory staff. They have the necessary background to recognize problems, be proficient in troubleshooting, problem solving, and have a thorough understanding of transfusion medicine. They may be key operators for various instruments, directly involved in writing SOP's, training, advanced maintenance procedures, troubleshooting, QC evaluation and documentation.  They assist in developing and modifying procedures and programs to ensure the accuracy of a test. Assistant Section Leads help to develop and achieve section goals and objectives - short and long term. They are involved in implementing and following guidelines for compliance with accrediting agencies such as AABB, CAP and TJC. They are involved with Quality Assurance and Improvement procedures in their area. They are directly involved with the daily operations of their area, delegating work and making schedule changes as needed. They review data daily and weekly, reporting problems to a supervisor immediately. They attend and/or participate in appropriate hospital and departmental meetings, committees and programs. They provide appropriate orientation to residents, new employees, and current employees on new procedures on a timely basis. They assume all the responsibilities of a supervisor in their absence and may perform additional duties as required or assigned.

1. PATIENT SAFETY

Follows established hospital and departmental precautions and procedures in the performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment for patients and others to include as appropriate:

  • Demonstrates appropriate hand hygiene
  • Demonstrates use of two patient identifiers
  • Demonstrates effective communication "hand offs" between providers, shifts, departments, etc.
  • Demonstrates use of proper precautions including use of appropriate personal protective equipment

2. TESTING

  • Accurately performs and expeditiously reports laboratory tests according to Standard Operating Procedures
  • Consistently repsonds to stat orders and assists others with workload fluctuations
  • Reports critical values in accordance with laboratory policy

3. QUALITY CONTROL

  • Consistently performs quality control procedures and appropriate instrument checks including equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Reviews, takes appropriate action, and documents according to Standard Operating Procedures

4. TRAINING/EDUCATION

  • Assumes responsibility for continuing education and competency assessment
  • Participates in laboratory quality assurance program including QA/QI, proficiency testing and procedure review (new and annual)

5. PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS

  • Consistently recognizes and takes initiative for performing tasks related to departmental operations without supervision
  • Assists others to achieve overall departmental productivity and efficiency
  • Asks supervisor for tasks or projects when time allows

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science required
  • Must be CLIA eligible for High Complexity TestingMT(ASCP) or equivalent preferred
  • 5 years in a hospital Laboratory
  • Staff adheres to all C.A.R.E. Standards
  • Must demonstrate annual CAP competencies in any area that they work
