- Assist Medical Technologists in various tasks to ensure proper operation of the Core Laboratory, Send Out, CP areas of the department.
- Triage specimens (blood, urine, stool, etc.) from pneumatic tube system, courier/transport systems (receive inpatient and outpatient specimens), in accordance with laboratory policy.
- Properly handle specimens in a timely manner while ensuring accuracy of data entry into the laboratory information system.
- Request correct reference lab tests in US or on reference lab requisitions.
- Responsible for managing specimens where testing is not performed at UConn Laboratory Medicine to reference laboratories, according to their specifications.
- Work effectively with the customer to answer specimen or other laboratory related questions in a timely manner to ensure the best patient care.
- Safely operates the track module according to manufacturer guidelines.
- Responsible for loading specimens into the automated track module.
- Process and package specimens from automated track aliquoter to reference laboratories.
- Ability to effectively spin tubes in centrifuge.
- Ability to pour off specimens for send outs to reference laboratories.
- Scan results in from reference laboratories.
- Handle questions, problems, follow up related to reference laboratory specimens.
- Answer phones and direct incoming calls to the correct technical bench.
- Stock and clean pour off bench.
- Maintain inventory of reference laboratory supplies.
- Checks pending logs, packing list, expected lists, and follows up on overdue reference lab
- testing.
- Manage failed fax log.
- Follow up to specimens/issues in problem basket.
- Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the Core Laboratory.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, procedures, techniques, and terminology
- Ability to carry out written and oral instructions
- Ability to perform calculations according to prescribed procedures, keep technical records and prepare reports
- Two (2) years of experience in related laboratory work.
- One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the level of Laboratory Assistant 1 or above.
- College training in the biological or physical sciences may be substituted for the General Experience based on fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an associate degree.
- One year or more experience in a clinical or research lab setting.
- Incumbents in this class must be willing to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases as necessary.
