Job Description:
During the period of employment, the intern is expected to learn techniques of wastewater sample collection and preservation, standard lab methods (e.g., sample filtration, record keeping), data reporting, Quality Control/ Quality Assurance, and analytical methods of wastewater.
The intern is expected to assist with the following lab duties: sample collection, sample analysis, data review, data entry, report filing, laboratory housekeeping, and routine equipment maintenance. The intern will work in a certified laboratory that always maintains good lab practices and follows standard operating procedures (SOPs) in accordance with Standard Methods and Jacobs policy.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Uses laboratory equipment and materials.
  • Performs routine computations, maintains records, and prepares reports.
  • Understands and carries out oral and written instructions.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
  • Operates a variety of laboratory equipment including pH meters, balances, furnaces, autoclaves, titrators, incubators, and calculators.
  • Maintains, cleans, and cares for laboratory equipment and material.
  • Assists in keeping laboratory records and preparing laboratory reports.
  • Collects water, wastewater, gas, and sludge samples for analysis.
  • Performs other duties as required.

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Firm understanding of high school-level chemistry, biology, and mathematical concepts.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Proficient in the use of computer software including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.

Ideally, you'll also have:
  • College experience studying concepts in chemistry, biology, and environmental science.
  • One year of lab experience within a chemistry, biology, or related laboratory.
  • Experience with lab equipment and lab operating procedures
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, equipment, and maintenance
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods of biological and chemical analyses performed in an environmental laboratory.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
The work area can involve a working environment indoors as well as outdoors, which could cause exposure to outdoor elements; proper environmental attire will be required. Some areas can have loud noise, active machinery, high pressure fluid systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, heights and depths, fumes, air borne particles, noxious gases, pathogens, and various chemicals. The use of appropriate safety equipment will be mandatory in these areas to prevent hazardous contact.
Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, twist and bend at the waist, turn, kneel, squat, raise arms above shoulder height, grasp, reach, perform repetitive hand movements and fine coordination when preparing reports and using a computer keyboard, have vision sufficient to read computer screens, printed documents and operate office equipment; must be able to judge color end-point changes (not be color blind), have hearing in the normal range with or without correction and able to hear timers ring. Must be free of respiratory problems of a nature that could be aggravated by exposure to chemical fumes found in a laboratory environment. In an 8-hour shift must be able to transport self across the facility, ascend and descend stair steps, lift objects up to 45 pounds from floor level to waist height, wear and use respiratory protection and other appropriate safety equipment.
