Job description

Saint Joseph's College of Maine is hiring for the position of full-time Kitchen Lead and Events Sous Chef! This position will support Saint Joseph's College Food Services by assisting with the food programs and ensuring a high level of customer service and guest relations.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Kitchen Manager in having ownership of the Café
  • Support the Executive Culinary Director in having ownership of the scheduled Events
  • Have a passion for food and high quality service
  • Ensure that high quality food items are creatively well prepared and presented in a cost effective manner
  • Prepare a well-balanced menu that meets the cultural and dietary needs of guests
  • Follow Maine State Food Codes and adhere to all Health Department, OSHA and ADA regulations
  • Follow all Safety Manual guidelines
  • Ensure all products and ingredients used are purchased following documented standards and sustainability commitments
  • Assist in sourcing products from local farmers, farmers markets and businesses
  • Train staff on the use of food service equipment
  • Supervise Café staff in the absence of the Kitchen Manager
  • Supervise Events staff in the absence of the Executive Culinary Director
  • Placing and receiving deliveries
  • Assist in menu development and creative elevation of meals
  • Support the training program for all Events staff and contracted staff in proper procedures and recipes
  • Teaching and adhering to the Saint Joseph's College food philosophy, culture, and commitment to quality food and exemplary service

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • A minimum of two years kitchen operations experience or applicable culinary experience in a similar volume, quality food service establishment
  • ServSafe certified; must provide valid certification within 120 days of hire
  • CPR certified; must provide valid certification within 120 days of hire

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Possess general hospitality knowledge and interest in sustainability and sustainable food practices
  • Ability to operate Web based ordering systems, process customer requests, changes to orders, menu updates and client profiles
  • Proficient with word processing (Google & Microsoft applications) and compose basic email memos
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner, interpret needs and respond timely, and offer effective solutions
  • Ability to speak clearly and listen attentively to staff, peers, supervisors, guests and clients in English
  • Must demonstrate teamwork skills and a willingness to help others
  • Posses a positive attitude to foster a cohesive working environment
  • Ability to lead small meetings and trainings with employees and other members of the company to cover basic health, safety, culinary and service topics
