Position Summary

**This is a full time on site position

The Junior Underwriter is responsible for rendering timely credit decisions on all incoming applicants consistent with internal loan policies, secondary market policies, underwriting mortgage commitments, and consumer regulations.


Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all lending and operational policies which are consistent with overall bank policies and operating objectives.
  • Renders credit decisions on incoming consumer/mortgage loan applications consistent with internal loan policies and verifying supporting documentation as submitted by Branch Managers/Lenders.
  • Determines whether an applicant meets all of the underwriting guidelines for the particular loan requested and approve/deny applicants based on underwriting guidelines (i.e. ability to repay, income and employment history, credit history, etc.).
  • Meet and maintain minimum SLA’s on consumer and mortgage lending turn times.
  • Ensures that the loan terms meet the Bank’s requirements and government regulations.
  • Documents reasons for approval/denial prior to sending loan package to loan processing.
  • Ensure that the property specifications and loan terms meet the Bank’s requirements and government regulations.
  • Provides timely feedback to Lenders/Branch Managers on underwriting decisions including providing interpretation and application of underwriting guidelines with guidance and recommendations to Lenders/Branch Managers as alternatives to application denials.
  • Responsible for ensuring final loan information is accurate in loan origination system prior to file being submitted for loan closing.
  • Input HMDA required information, as well as manage HMDA quality control, assuring accuracy and following compliance guidelines/policies.
  • Manage Freddie Mac and FHLBI operations: monthly accounting, delinquency reporting and quality control review.
  • Management of Rate Locks.
  • Manage monthly Freddie Mac/FHLBI Reporting requirements (accounting/delinquencies).
  • Administer the loss mitigation process/foreclosure reporting.
  • Comply with all department and bank policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Make recommendations to management concerning possible methods to improve loan processing and servicing functions of department
  • Pre and post close file reviews, manage and maintain tracking; assist when required to satisfy any post-closing issues.
  • Review and manage quality control file results and respond to error resolution.


Other Functions

  • Assist with all other consumer and mortgage loan duties as needed and assigned.
  • Other duties assigned from time to time by the Loan Operations Manager.
  • Familiar with and abides by all bank regulations including but not limited to BSA and OFAC.

Working Conditions of the Job

  • Stationed at desk 75-100% of working time.
  • No particular hazards.
  • No unusual or physical exertion required.
Requirements:

Job Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of mortgage/consumer processing/underwriting experience required. Previous mortgage underwriting experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or an Associate’s Degree in financial services or mortgage banking or course work related to finance, business management, statistics, law and accounting, preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience but not required.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to qualify for NMLS approval.
  • Excellent written, verbal, math and analytical skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
  • Must have good customer relation skills which includes proper phone etiquette.
  • Must have excellent customer service and communication skills, and the ability to handle delicate situations with diplomacy and tact.
  • Professional appearance and manner is required.
