BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:
The P XR SYSTEM PROTECTION Department of the P T&D AND INTERCONNECTION PLNG Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: PROFESSIONAL)
JOB FUNCTION:
Performs relay and protective device planning, design, engineering, and coordination studies for the orderly expansion and enhancement of the Company's generation, transmission, sub-transmission, and distribution systems under the direction of a licensed Engineer.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares plans, diagrams, designs sketches and calculations, and other engineering studies as required for capital additions, modernization, and maintenance of the electrical grid.
  • Performs relay and protective device coordination studies.
  • Reviews modifications/improvements to design of relay protection and control settings, programming, and schematic diagrams.
  • Performs post fault relay analysis on common system outages and in certain situations analyzes relay operations following severe system outages.
  • Consults with other Planning, Engineering, Operating, and Customer workgroups to obtain information for protection applications.
  • Coordinates and checks the designs and studies submitted by outside engineers.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education and experience required. Emphasis in the field of Power System Analysis is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of the methods and principles of short circuit analysis, power system load flow analysis, and power system stability analysis.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of power system protective relaying.
  • Working knowledge of short circuit and relay coordination programs.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.

Skills Requirements
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals occasionally dealing with sensitive, difficult, or confrontational issues while using tact, courtesy, and discretion.
  • Analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills to handle detailed projects and programs.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.

Experience Requirements
  • Multiple (1-3) years of experience in power system protection, planning, design, or operations areas.

Highly Desirable
  • Working knowledge and experience in substation design and/or operations.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the Designer II - Protection [Req ID 8767] position is $75,000.00 to $95,700.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
