EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Must be a Christian with a strong desire to bring others into a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
  • Ability to assist in teaching basic Bible lessons to children.
  • High School Diploma or higher.
  • Work permit may be required for those under age 18, per local guidelines.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

General: Effective verbal and written communications, ability to multitask. Must be able to read, write and communicate in English. Must have ability to work and relate well with people. Must have a positive attitude toward helping and fostering children in their development.

Organization: The ability to maintain a directed schedule along with the ability to lead a large group through multiple projects in a timely manner. Must be responsible, detail oriented, and can take projects from beginning through completion.

Professional: The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment. The ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Able to work with limited supervision, and work in a team setting with other professionals. Exercise good judgment and comfortable taking initiative with projects.

EQUIPMENT:

  • Proficiency required in Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher.  Proficiency a plus in Microsoft 365, Microsoft Teams, Media Player, and Media Shout (or similar program).
  • Telephone, and computer, copy/fax machines.
  • Ability to operate mini shuttle after required training.

SCOPE OF POSITION

The primary function of this position is to assist the Counselor to lead a group of campers in all Day Camp Activities. This includes maintaining the safety, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, character, and skill development of all camp staff and campers. Assist the Counselor to carry out activities, promote camper participation. Assist campers in all aspects of the School’s Out Summer Day Camp program, including sports skills, arts and crafts, movements, educational concepts, musical concepts, and various games.

The SOSDC offers programs for campers 5-14, as well as a “Staff-In-Training” program for staff 14 and 15 years of age. Must have the ability and desire to work with children, parents, volunteers, and peers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Administrative

  1. Adhere to Weekly and Daily Staff Assignment schedules.
  2. Follow group schedule for assigned camper group, including support staff that is assigned to the group.
  3. Ensure accurate group headcount of registered campers at all times, recording all required statistical information for reporting and tracking.
  4. Maintain a safe working environment: report all facility defects/problems to the Program Director.
  5. Enforce all rules that pertain to the camp, children’s program, and facility on a consistent basis.
  6. Assist in emergencies or treatment of injured participants or staff. Follow up with completion of appropriate paperwork as directed.
  7. Enforce all Salvation Army policies, as well as any policies required by state or local government, and guidelines indicated in grants for the program.
  8. Ensures proper care of building, including cleanliness, care of equipment and reporting all needed repairs/purchases to Corps Assistant.

Behavioral

  1. Report any needed behavior contracts to Counselor or Program Staff as needed.
  2. Recognize spiritual need of individuals, which may require referral to the officer/pastor.
  3. Will handle disputes with participants in a professional manner with guidance of the as needed with coordination from Day Camp Counselors.
  4. Will communicate any camper, parent, or staff issues with the Counselor or Program Director immediately. Follow up with appropriate documentation as directed.
  5. Will adhere to and implement discipline procedures, including necessary documentation and reporting, created for campers and staff, in cooperation with the Counselor and Program Director.
  6. Will keep camper and staff issues confidential. Do not share issues with other campers, parents or patrons, news organizations or staff who are not involved.
  7. Will interface respectfully with staff, volunteers, parents, and campers of various socio-economic backgrounds.
  8. Enforce all rules that pertain to the camp, children’s program, and facility on a consistent basis.
  9. Maintain a safe working environment: report all facility defects/problems to the Program Director.
  10. Assist in emergencies or treatment of injured participants or staff. Follow up with completion of appropriate paperwork as directed.

Program

  1. Primary weekly hours will 40 hours, with a varying schedule worked between 7am and 7pm, Monday through Friday, with some varying hours due to special events or staff coverage needs.
  2. Assist Counselor in running Daily Huddle, which emphasizes social-emotional learning and interaction, as well as teaching basics of self-care.
  3. Assist Counselor with devotions for group to reinforce Chapel teaching.
  4. Assist Counselor and Program Staff with activities for group times.
  5. Assist Counselor with maintaining cleanliness in assigned group classroom/meeting space, as well as other basic cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  6. Assist Program Staff assist with Chapel and all related activities, including participating in skits, leading songs, and Scripture memorization activities.
  7. Responsible to assist with Recreation, Computers, and other group activities.
  8. Responsible to serve in a daily Free Time activity, especially ensuring coverage of hallways and bathrooms.
  9. Responsible to attend all off-site activities with assigned group, assisting with proper supervision and assigned duties in leading games and activities.
  10. Responsible to assist with some food service for meals and snacks.
  11. Assist Counselor with any needed intervention for campers experiencing difficulty, including helping campers reset, take a break, redirect, etc). Report any additional need for help to Program Director or Corps Assistant.
  12. Ensure proper PTM policies are being followed in all aspects of programming.
  13. Perform other assignments/duties as directed.
  14. Regular and punctual attendance is an essential job requirement.
  15. Flexibility and a cooperative spirit are crucial characteristics of the individuals who hold this important position.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to perform tasks of a repetitive nature without diminished performance.
  • Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. for short distance.
  • Must be in excellent physical and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of the gymnasium and athletic field programs.
  • Must be physically able to give emergency care if a situation arises.
  • Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, squat, twist body, stand for short/long periods of time, kneel push, pull, have sense of touch, reach, grasp with hands and fingers, climb stairs, close vision, distance vision, smell, talk, hear, have eye-hand coordination, have manual dexterity, speak and read English and work in noisy areas.
  • May walk or stand on varied surfaces. Will require work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • The following equipment may be used: telephone, computer equipment, electronic recorder, fax/copy machine, microphones, audio-visual equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills-CPR/AED

Education High School Diploma or better

Experience-Previous experience working with children, preferably in a camp or After-School Club environment.

Licenses & Certifications- Food Handlers Card; CPR/First Aid Certificate
