The Judicial Assistant works closely with a Deputy Commissioner, who is an administrative law judge, to support quick and accurate responses to motions and to format and proofread Opinions detailing the outcome of cases to injured workers and employers.

Job Duties
The Judicial Division of the Commission is made up of the Commissioners, the Chief Deputy Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioners, the Clerk's Office, all Regional Offices, the Alternative Dispute Resolution Department (ADR), and the Petition & Order and Judicial Compliance Departments.
The Judicial Division provides information about the Virginia Workers' Compensation Act and mediates or adjudicates disputed claims. The Division's primary objective is to hear and decide disputed claims and issues arising under the Act in a prompt, fair and impartial manner, affording due process to all litigants.
Contested or controverted workers' compensation claims are referred to the Judicial Division for adjudication. Each contested claim is docketed for hearing, either for an evidentiary hearing or for a decision on the record. All areas of the state are served by a Deputy Commissioner or Commissioner at least once a month. Foreign language interpreters are provided at evidentiary hearings by the Commission at no cost for non-English speaking litigants and witnesses. The Act requires written decisions in each case.
The Judicial Department of the Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission in the Virginia Beach Office is seeking a qualified individual who thrives in a team-oriented environment to serve as a Judicial Assistant to a Deputy Commissioner. The selected candidate will serve as the primary administrative and legal Assistant to one of our Deputy Commissioners. The candidate will independently managea large volume of tasks; setand manage hearing dockets, and assist with the judicial processing of docketed files assigned to the Deputy Commissioner. In addition, they will maintain and manage physical and digital files pre- and post-hearing and serve as a substitute evidentiary hearing clerksand assistother office staff as needed and assigned.
VWC Compensation Structure
This position is classified as a pay grade 6 based on a 14 pay grade scale as part of VWC's compensation structure.
Telework Structure
Our agency is currently using a hybrid model for teleworking. Our positions at this time are not 100% teleworking. All candidates would be expected to report to our Headquarters/Regional Office as requested. Telework scheduling is at the discretion of the Manager based on the business needs of the department. Upon hire, candidates should expect to have all training and orientation conducted at the Headquarters Office.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Administrative support experience to include drafting, revising, and proofreading documents; scheduling; and performing data entry in a related office environment
  • Experience providing excellent customer service to attorneys, doctors, or other professionals; employees; and the public
  • Ability to understand legal and ethical concepts and adhere to appropriate standards required
  • Must have strong, effective interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with stakeholders at all levels
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with attention to detail; organize, coordinate, and prioritize assignments; and meet deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills including proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation
Additional Considerations
  • Experience as a paralegal or legal assistant and/or experience performing legal research preferred
  • Working knowledge of Workers' Compensation practices, procedures, and/or legal terminology preferred
