A HVAC Sheetmetal Journeyman is a highly skilled professional who specializes in the fabrication, installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) sheet metal systems. Journeyman have completed their apprenticeship training and have acquired experience in the field. Here is a detailed job description for a HVAC Sheetmetal Journey worker.

The role of a HVAC Sheetmetal Journeyman requires a high level of expertise in sheet metal fabrication, installation, and maintenance for HVAC systems in commercial buildings. With your skills and experience, you play a vital role in ensuring efficient and effective HVAC operations and providing comfortable environments for building occupants.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fabrication and Installation: As a HVAC Sheetmetal Journeyman, your primary responsibility is to fabricate and install sheet metal components and systems for HVAC applications. You will use specialized tools and machinery to cut, shape, and form sheet metal into the desired shapes and sizes, and then assemble and install the fabricated components in accordance with industry standards and project specifications.
  • Ductwork Construction: One of the key aspects of your role is the construction and installation of HVAC ductwork systems. This involves fabricating, assembling, and installing ducts that distribute conditioned air throughout commercial buildings. You will be responsible for accurately measuring and cutting sheet metal, forming connections and joints, and sealing the ducts to ensure proper airflow, energy efficiency, and compliance with building codes.
  • Equipment Installation: In addition to ductwork, you will also install HVAC equipment and components such as air handling units, exhaust fans, dampers, grilles, and registers. This includes positioning and securing the equipment, connecting sheet metal components, and ensuring proper alignment and functionality.
  • Maintenance and Repair: HVAC Sheetmetal Journey workers are often involved in the maintenance and repair of existing sheet metal systems in commercial buildings. This includes inspecting and identifying issues such as leaks, damage, or deterioration in ductwork, vents, and other HVAC sheet metal components. You will diagnose problems, recommend appropriate repair methods, and carry out the necessary repairs to restore functionality and efficiency.
  • Sheet Metal Fabrication: Journeyman have advanced skills in sheet metal fabrication techniques. This includes using computer-aided design (CAD) software to create precise sheet metal layouts, selecting, and working with several types of sheet metal, such as aluminum, galvanized steel, or stainless steel, and utilizing welding, soldering, and brazing techniques to join and assemble sheet metal components.
  • Compliance and Safety: As a HVAC Sheetmetal Journeyman, you must adhere to safety regulations and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment. This includes following proper procedures for working at heights, handling sheet metal, using tools and equipment, and ensuring compliance with local building codes and industry standards.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Effective communication and collaboration with other tradespeople, project managers, and clients are crucial in this role. You will work closely with HVAC technicians, electricians, and plumbers to coordinate installations, troubleshoot issues, and ensure seamless integration of HVAC systems within commercial buildings.
  • Continuous Learning and Professional Development: Journeyman are expected to stay updated with the latest advancements in HVAC technology, materials, and techniques. This may involve participating in training programs, attending industry seminars or workshops, and staying informed about changes in building codes and regulations.


Required Experience

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to determine the required dimensions, materials, and quantities for fabrication Expertise with Microsoft Excel.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with other tradespeople, project managers, and clients.
