Description
The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Journeyman Meter Technician with the Electric Department. This position performs single-phase and polyphase self-contained and transformer-rated metering work, including installation, maintenance, testing, and special meter investigations. This position will perform troubleshooting and wiring verification on complex transformer-rated metering installations and primary metering configurations, including wholesale/transmission deliveries and plant metering. Obtain data from metering equipment, such as load profile data. Perform metering material handling duties. Safety is a priority in the City of Garden City, and employees must be willing to commit to participating in job site tailgate briefings, certifications, and all other required training programs. This position will maintain, install, test, and rebuild (when required) all revenue metering for the City of Garden City.
Examples of Duties

• Performs acceptance tests and calibration of all watt-hour meters, electronic or electro-mechanical.
• Performs inspections and verification tests of meter installations in the field and meter shop.
• Completes safe and accurate installation of Current and Potential Transformers and required wiring on new and existing metering installations.
• Performs inspections and verification tests of meter installations in the field.
• Maintains electronic and paper database for all installed meters.
• Coordinates with direct supervisor on maintaining proper levels of required watt-hour meters for inventory.
• Maintains test equipment and standards as required to assume the highest and unquestionable accuracy.
• Investigate customer concerns regarding high usage and verify the accuracy of electric meters for utility customers.
• Advises utility customers about energy usage from reports issued by the Service and Finance Billing Clerk and the use of conservation methods.
• Learn and adopt current and future software programs required to calibrate audit diagnosis tests and change various types of metering instruments.
• Submit, on a timely basis, all required reports to the Electric Utility Superintendent and direct Supervisor.
• Maintains all meter stock, repair parts, and small tools necessary for daily operations.
• Maintains neat, efficient and secure workplace.

• Work with warehouse personnel to order and sustain all materials and tools necessary to provide metering services.
• Investigate all reports and discoveries of meter tampering and power thefts. Ensuring that these incidents are properly documented and addressed.
• Scheduled for On-Call rotation assisting the substation technicians.
• Understand the AMI network, the metering infrastructure, and the Electrical distribution circuits.

Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Skill in operating meter testing equipment. Knowledge of methods and procedures utilized on various electrical meters. Effective written and verbal communication skills necessary for customer and co-worker interaction. Knowledge of basic electrical principles and proficiency in basic math skills-familiarity with basic computer operations and ability to run common application programs such as Microsoft Office products. Ability to maintain a variety of records and files. Exhibit the willingness to continue education and skill development as technology changes.
Education, Certification and Experience:
High school diploma or GED. Associate or higher degree from an accredited tech school or college in electronics engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, computer engineering technology, or communications technology. Have 3-5 years prior fieldwork experience relevant to the job description or comparable work experience. Or a combination of education and experience. A valid Kansas driver's license is required. A Commercial Driver's License is required within six months of employment.
Supplemental Information
Environment:
The tasks and responsibilities are primarily conducted indoors; however, the candidate may be exposed to all weather conditions, varying noise levels, and hazardous conditions as the equipment is usually outdoors. There is a full range of work surfaces, including concrete, ground, wood, and tile floors.
Equipment/Tools Used:
Equipment: Computer, telephone, radio, printer, optic probe, air gun, WECO2350 meter test board, Radian RM17 portable field meter test unit, voltage-amp meters, and "Bird Dog" testing equipment.
Physical Characteristics:
Ability to lift up to 25lbs. on a regular basis (75 lbs. occasionally): bend, reach, sit, stand, push, pull, write, hold, repetitive motions, drive, walk, hear, see, operated assigned equipment.
