McKenzie Electric Cooperative (MEC) is currently seeking qualified candidates for Journeyman Lineworker. The selected candidate for this full-time, benefited position is responsible for building, maintaining, repairing and restoring overhead and underground power distribution lines within the scope of his/her training and certification in a safe and efficient manner within accepted MEC and Rural Utilities Service (RUS) operations standards. The selected candidate will support the mission of MEC and make our members first priority.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Proficient journeyman lineman in electrical line work, specializing in the construction and maintenance of electric distribution lines and services.
  • Skilled in underground and overhead tasks, including climbing and handling various components such as arms, transformers, and conductors.
  • Conducts reviews of assigned construction or maintenance projects and recommends personnel, materials, and equipment for timely and safe project completion.
  • Performs maintenance activities on energized or de-energized lines to ensure a safe and operable system.
  • Assists in analyzing and evaluating operation and maintenance activities related to distribution system facilities, contributing to the resolution of service problems.
  • Investigates and remedies service interruptions, ensuring prompt restoration of service and continued reliability.
  • Conducts line patrol activities, taking corrective actions as necessary to ensure safe and reliable service to MEC members.
  • Performs switching procedures as needed to facilitate operations.
  • Installs sectionalizing equipment and assists with maintenance for continued reliable service within specifications.
  • Hooks up single-phase and multi-phase transformer connections to guarantee proper voltage levels.
  • Manages tasks related to meter handling, including disconnecting, installing, and removing, in compliance with member requests and Cooperative policy.
  • Reads meters and performs disconnections to assist the Billing Department in maintaining current and accurate accounts.
  • Regularly checks tools and protective equipment, providing recommendations for replacements to ensure safety and operability.
  • Ensures maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment, keeping them clean, safe, and operable, and completing required documentation.
  • Manages truck stock of material inventories and documents materials used for construction and maintenance jobs.
  • Coordinates with the Foreman regarding any material changes used for jobs.
  • Holds certifications in first aid, CPR, and other life-saving techniques, performing these as necessary during emergencies.
  • Actively attends and participates in training programs for continuous improvement in job knowledge, skills, and safety.

Education/Experience: High School diploma or equivalent; or four years of increasing responsible experience in all phases of distribution, line construction and maintenance of electric distribution utility or related industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications/Licenses: Completion of an approved apprenticeship program. Completion of Electrical Line worker program preferred. A valid ND Class A driver's license is required.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of RUS construction specifications, National Electrical Safety Code, OSHA regulations and National Electric Code
  • Possess understanding of applicable RUS Bulletins and regulations, Cooperative policies, terms and conditions of service, rates, regulations and approved practices, particularly as it pertains to line operations activities.
  • Basic understanding of how PC based Window's software operates.
