The Opportunity: IV Technician - IV Therapy Department

In order to meet the timely needs for care of patients presenting to inpatient units, for vascular access device insertion assist, venipuncture for difficult access patients and vascular access needs, the role of the IV Tech is critical to the vascular access team and our patients.

Why This Role Is Important?

Reporting to the Nurse Director, the IV Tech will be an integral member of the care team, working together with nurses, physicians, physician's assistants and patient care associates to provide care and service to patients.   The IV Tech will be expected to have a global view of the inpatient units needs for vascular access requests and support the patient, clinical staff and other members of the care team in providing patients with care as efficiently as possible.

General Responsibilities

1.         Phlebotomy:

       Collect blood using good judgment, reasonable and prudent care and according to policies and procedures, including but not limited to the following:

o   Check two patient identifiers and insure a complete match between requisitions, labels and patient identification card.

o   Use hand hygiene procedures according to unit guidelines

o   Select appropriate specimen collection equipment

o   Select appropriate site for blood collection.

o   Tie tourniquet and prepare site for venipuncture

o   Collect specimen according to order of draw

o   Insure adequate mixing of specimen in tube by inversion or mechanical device.

o   Label in presence of patient

o   Package and transport specimen

o   Monitor patient and ensure bleeding has stopped, and patient is stable.

o   Review prior to collection a standard checklist which includes checking for potential adverse reactions such as history of fainting, and latex allergy.

o   Maintains patient privacy, and follows all HIPAA guidelines

o   With training, or if qualified by competency review, provide EKG, clerical and specimen transport functions.

o   With training, or if qualified by competency review, provide pediatric and ancillary services to phlebotomy operations serviced by Laboratory Support Services.

o   Maintain adequate supply inventory, and complete monthly inventory checks as assigned.

o   Satisfy annual required continuing education for phlebotomists and mandatory life safety, HIPAA and other required training.

o   Work in collaboration with and practice good team working and communication skills with co-workers.

2.         PICC Assist and PICC Dressing Change:

       Ensure adherence to proper aseptic technique through use of and completion of a standardized checklist performed by a Registered Nurse you are empower as the assist and IV tech to stop the procedure for any breaches in aseptic technique.

       Completion of a checklist to assure sterile procedure is followed throughout the procedure.

       Supports patient care and the health care team by expediting room turnover for PICC insertion procedures.

       Demonstrates a strong sense of shared responsibility to maintain an orderly work area, maintaining supplies and equipment in rooms and supply area.

       Sterile PICC Line Dressing Changes:

       Perform regular dressing changes for PICC lines in accordance with established protocols.

       Integrity Checks for PICC dressing for irritation, blood or other complications.

       Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of PICC line care and dressing changes.  

       Communicate any issues, or patient concerns regarding the PICC dressing with the IVRN

o   Infection Control:

  Ensure the environment, equipment, and supplies are sterile and free from contamination.

  Strictly adhere to infection control policies and procedures.

Skills

  Must be able to read/write English and communicate clearly with staff and patients.

  Effectively performs venipuncture, as well as skin puncture (where applicable and if trained) on adults, elders, adolescents and school aged children, and if trained and assigned, pediatric venipuncture, finger and heel sticks on infants or toddlers or preschool age children.

  Excellent interpersonal communication and skills whether in person, via the telephone and/or in writing.

  Superior service attitude; Compassionate and kind; Energetic and upbeat; Self-motivator; Flexibility and proven ability to handle multiple tasks.

  Works well both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  Intellectual independence and have a desire to learn and develop new skills and better methods of completing work efforts.

  Exceptional organizational and time management skills; asking for direction when appropriate. 

  Attentive to standard safety and infection control procedures including standard precautions.

Preferred: Must have recent experience in clinical patient care and/or at least one-year relevant work experience.

Required: Licensed, certified Phlebotomist, Nursing Assistant with phlebotomy experience, Medical Assistant, IV Technician
