About the Department
The mission of Communication Technologies is to provide premier communication services to the entire NC State University community. The department provides communication services such as data, telephony, cable TV, video, and converged services such as IP Telephony and IP Video to over 34,000 students and approximately 8,000 faculty and staff.
Supporting this continuously growing academic population is a distributed enterprise data network that provides over 75,000 network access ports with connectivity to the Internet and Internet2, 12,000 phone lines, and 4,000 cable television outlets.
Communication Technologies (ComTech) is viewed as the telephony, cable television, and network service provider for the NC State University community and is responsible for designing, maintaining, and supporting the campus voice, video, and data network infrastructures and all associated components.
Essential Job Duties
A Network Specialist will be part of a team that is responsible for wired network connectivity of the entire NCSU campus, including data centers, core and edge networks. The person in this position must demonstrate proficiency with multiple technologies and protocols including but not limited to: advanced routing/switching, firewalls, wireless, DNS and DHCP. The Networking Specialist is responsible for diagnosing and correcting network outages and common performance problems in departmental LANS and across the campus backbone.
The Network Specialist will have some responsibilities with the following:
  • Assisting with the planning, design, setup, and troubleshooting of local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs).
  • Performing capacity planning, forecasting/trending, hardware configuration and installation of such items as routers and switches according to best practices and procedures
  • Researching, evaluating, performing cost analysis, and writing business justification for purchasing new technologies.
  • Assisting in vendor selection as part of this process.
  • Producing and maintaining current documentation for areas of responsibility.
  • Participating in maintenance windows after hours and weekends, as required.
  • Interacting with staff from Central IT and campus colleges and departments to develop requirements and initiate and/or implement technology solutions to meet customer requirements.
  • Maintaining an awareness of and researches new technologies as they relate to the delivery of network services.
  • Assisting with the automation of common tasks.
  • Integrating new technologies and solutions with existing network management tools
  • Participating in the development of annual project budgets

Bachelor's degree and 5 years experience

This position requires a strong knowledge of a large subset of the following routing and switching concepts such as EVPN, BGP, OSPF, HSRP, VSS, IPV6, DOT1x, IPSec, TLS, SSL, MPLS, TCP/IP, VLANs, SNMP Management.
Effective communication skills are required for this position in order to work with University staff and students with varying levels of networking knowledge. This position needs to be able to determine the best communication method based on the technical expertise for the person(s) they are working with so that design principles are understood, implemented and problems are resolved in an efficient manner. This includes as new technologies and solutions are implemented, this position will be responsible for presenting the solutions and support information to the NOC/helpdesk staff.
Analytical skills - In order to be an effective senior network engineer, this position needs to have a high degree of analytical skills. This means they need to understand or learn all aspects of how applications, network protocols, firewalls, load balancers and databases work in order to troubleshoot complex performance issues. This position needs to be able to look at different types of data such as packet captures, switch statistics and net flow data, then be able to recognize when things are outside of normal operating parameters.
