Herron Island seeks an Island Manager

Herron Island is a homeowner’s association situated off the coast of the Key Peninsula in Pierce County, WA. It is a private island serviced by a private ferry, and there is no commerce on the island. Since 1959 HMC Management has been managed by an elected Board of Directors.

With its 350+ households there is a vibrant volunteer community that has built and financed major improvements on the island over time including a new ferry, the associated dolphins, ramps and piers and a water system with fire hydrants installed in 2012. The Island Manager, under the general direction of the President of the HMC Board of Directors, is responsible for the general management of HMC including the management of the ferry, union ferry crew, office staff, HMC Water department, and HMC committees such as Roads, Docks, Policies, Parks, Ferry Committee and Emergency Planning. The Island Manager is responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with local, state and federal agencies. The Island Manager directs and coordinates broad organizational activities having as their purpose the planning, development and implementation of policies, programs and practices in support of the management, administration, ferry operations and functional support to HMC and members.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES and ACCOUNTABILITIES: Works on site three days per week and remotely other days. (Total 32 hours most weeks) Required to be present one-half Saturday each month to support monthly Board meeting on site. Seek subject matter experts on and off the island to liaise andinform HMC on a wide variety of issues. Develops and implements both short and long-term planning for HMC. Recruits, selects, leads, motivates, supports and retains an experienced team, including Office Manager, Receptionist, and ferry crew. Ensures full compliance with applicable statutes, rules, contracts, and administrative responsibilities. Provides leadership to, and finds creative solutions, for HMC needs. Responsible for the name, reputation and integrity of HMC with suppliers, service providers, and government agencies. Maintains relationships with banks, legal counsel, and all service providers. Formulates plans and policies and allocates resources for the achievement of HMC objectives. Acts as legal liaison as needed for legal interactions and inquiries; as needed for the business or as requested by the board of directors; for such needs as real estate liens and collections, employment, contracts, union matters and collective bargaining agreements Interprets and applies HMC By-Laws and Rules, and Policies. Organizes work units and determines allocation of duties and authorities to subordinates. Exercises control to ensure that objectives are achieved in accordance with HMC Bylaws, Rules, and Policies. Determines and implements risk management controls with Board. Coordinates with the board to create policy for implementation. Manages expenses crucial to the HMC budget in coordination with the HMC Treasurer and Board.

JOB REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Broad experience as a General Manager. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Prefers 10 years management experience with emphasis in legal, regulatory, professional, small business and professional services, or a combination thereof. Experience in management of employees with diverse backgrounds. Strong leadership skills. Ability to develop, advise, and provide support to volunteer Board of Directors. The ability to define, target and act on multiple needs within discernable timetable.
