POSITION SUMMARY

Iron Workers fabricate steel pieces to plan specifications using various tools, raise, place, and unite iron or steel girders, columns, and other structural members to form completed structures or structural frameworks. Ironworker will need to understand engineering drawings to oversee and manage daily manufacturing activities in Processing, Welding, Paint and Assembly to meet project delivery expectations. You would be cutting, grinding and welding steel members to make alterations. Assignments may be in the fabrication shop or on job site depending on client and business needs.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Reading blueprints to understand piece fabrication requirements.
  • Cutting, grinding and welding steel members to fabricate or make alterations to specifications, using oxyacetylene welding equipment.
  • Guiding structural-steel member, using tab line (rope)
  • Fastening structural-steel members to cable of hoist, using chain or cable
  • Setting up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural steel
  • Inserting sealing strips, wiring, insulating material, ladders, flanges, gauges, and valves
  • Verifying vertical and horizontal alignment of structural-steel members, using leveler tools
  • Bolting aligned structural-steel members in position until they can be permanently, bolted, or welded in place.
  • Pulling, pushing, or prying structural-steel member into approximate position while member is supported by hoisting device
  • Forcing structural-steel members into final position, using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks, and hand tools
  • Operating Fabrication Shop machinery and equipment; cutoff saws, grinders, shears, rolls, brakes, presses, forming machines, spinning machines, and punch.
  • Reading job specifications to determine machine adjustments and material requirements
  • Setting stops or guides to specified length as indicated by scale, rule, or template
  • Positioning workpiece against stops or aligning layout marks with die or blade
  • Pushing button or depressing pedal to activate machine
  • Observing machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunction
  • Measuring workpiece dimensions to determine accuracy of machine operation
  • Removing burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from workpiece
  • Performing minor machine maintenance such as oiling machines, dies, or workpieces
  • Operating any equipment needed to perform job
  • Performing other work-related duties as assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • High School diploma, or equivalent
  • 2-3 years in related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to read and interpret metal rule
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, loud environment
  • Ability to be self-guided and display initiative
  • Maintain a strong commitment to safety
  • Obtain or have OSHA 10 Certification
  • Able to travel to North American job site locations

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne
particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, in some instances this job may require work in areas where ear protection is necessary. Ability to wear Personal Protection Equipment without modifications or obstructions, including but not limited to; ear protections, safety glasses, face shields, face masks, respirator, burn protection gear, gloves, sleeves, aprons. When visiting a job site, you may be exposed to temperature changes, atmospheric conditions, dusty and dirty environments, safety hazards and wet conditions.
