What can you expect?
Specifically, this position is focused on the foundation and steel erection for telecommunication structures ranging from 80ft to 300ft. As the Iron Worker, you must be responsible for completing all structural steel permanent and temporary work according to project plans and supervisory instructions. Under general supervision, perform master level work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of structures and related physical facilities; act as lead worker to other classified staff and entry level Iron Workers, and perform related work as required. You are responsible for the full range of structural steel erection and miscellaneous metals erection, using or working from one or more blueprints/shop drawings, specifications, drawings, or instructions to design, build, remodel, retrofit, maintain, and construct various types of facilities and structures. This position must inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.
How will you do it?

  • Lead the erection of steel, fabrication, grid layout, rigging, etc.
  • Perform all job duties of craft trade.
  • Responsible for reading and understanding Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings.
  • Make a hang list, read details of drawings, read all notes on drawings before erection, locate and understand ECNs and holds on drawings.
  • Responsible for understanding when to stop production work and when an RFI needs to be initiated.
  • Read and understand craft specs and cut sheets, craft spec procedures, and recommendations.
  • Locate piece marks for correct views and know how to pick out different elevations.
  • Recognize the correct installation based on the orientation.
  • Read and interpret symbols based on the legend.
  • Responsible for knowing and applying safe rigging practices (chokers, slings, etc.).
  • Dictate correct knots based on material.
  • Know all aspects of connecting.
  • Correct procedures of Bolting.
  • Cut material from layout and cut sheets.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
No supervisory responsibilities, but this position may train and direct the work of other classified staff in the area (including helpers and/or laborers).
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • All around knowledge of materials, terms, and practices in construction field
  • Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, meeting deadlines and general time management.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, take direction from supervisor(s), high degree of attention to details, follow work rules, and adhere to project schedule.
  • Ability to work productively under pressure.
  • Strong self-motivation and work ethic; ability to work with or without direct supervision.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, regulations, instruction manuals, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Ability to work as a team player with co-workers in a respectful and supportive manner as well as independently.
  • Ability to properly wear PPE and abide by company and project-specific safety policies.
  • Ability to live and work with co-workers in close quarters and keep good morale.
  • Ability to participate in group meetings.

Who is STG Inc. looking for?
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prior work experience as an experienced Iron Worker in a Commercial, Structural, Bridge Heavy Civil, or Military construction operations setting, 3 years preferred.
  • Ability to travel to remote places for work related purposes (up to 100% of time) and work a flexible schedule is required.
  • Ability to pass a background screening drug testing.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Iron Worker trade training or metal fabrication (welding) preferred.
  • Cell, wind, or microwave tower erection preferred.
  • Certified structural welder under AWS D1.1 preferred.
  • Knowledge of remote Alaska logistics and construction practices strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience in Alaska's rural construction industry is preferred.
