Under the direction of the department Supervisor, the IR Technologist is responsible for performing IR cases, including operation of all equipment used in the IR suite (fluoroscope, power injector, wires, catheters, etc.), sterilely prepping the patient, acting as first assist to the physician, and post-processing of digital images.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Patient Care
a. Confirm patient's identity using double patient identifiers per hospital procedure.
b. Evaluate patient's ability to understand and comply with requirements for the requested examination.
c. Examine radiographic requisition to verify accuracy and completeness of information.
d. Provide for patient safety, comfort, and modesty.
2. Radiation Protection
a. Wear a personnel monitoring device and evaluate individual occupational exposure reports.
b. Restrict beam to limit exposure area, improve image quality, and reduce radiation dose.
c. Question female patient of child-bearing age about possible pregnancy and take appropriate action (i.e., document response, contact physician).
d. Prevent all unnecessary persons from remaining in area during x-ray exposure.
3. Equipment Operation
a. Prepare and operate fluoroscopy unit and accessories.
4. Equipment Maintenance
a. Recognize and report malfunctions in the radiographic or fluoroscopic unit and accessories.
b. Beam restriction system
c. Beam alignment
d. Source-to-image receptor distance indicator
e. Radiation protection devices (lead aprons and gloves)
5. Types of Procedures
a. Arterial and venous interventions: central venous access/ chest ports, visceral and trauma angiography, IVC filter placement/retrieval, uterine fibroid embolization, prostate artery embolization
b. Pain procedures: kyphoplasty, sacroplasty, celiac plexus neurolysis
c. Interventional oncology: Y90 radioembolization, chemoembolization, and microwave and cryoablation
d. GI and GU interventions: cholecystostomy, gastrostomy, nephrostomy tube placements; biliary tube and stent placement
e. Dialysis: hemodialysis catheters, AV fistula maintenance, peritoneal dialysis catheter placement.
6. Responsibilities:
a. Performs advanced technical duties for a wide variety of vascular and non-vascular Interventional Radiology procedures. Performs all duties including sterile prep, first assist, float, and post procedure technical duties.
b. Operates all equipment used in the IR suite, including: fluoroscopy, digital subtraction angiography, high pressure injector, cone-beam CT, both standard and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) units. Performs advanced post processing of digital images and evaluates films for technical quality.
c. Maintains knowledge of IR equipment including catheters, guide wires, angioplasty balloons, stents, coils, and other exam-specific equipment.
d. Utilizes time productively and appropriately with respect to patient flow, room use, stocking of supplies, and clerical duties to increase department efficiency.
e. Cleans and maintains procedure rooms with supplies, sterile stock and procedure trays.
f. Works on-call on a rotating basis as assigned by the supervisor after normal working hours.
g. Interacts professionally and courteously with patients, co-workers, and medical staff. Must be able to wear a lead apron and stand for long periods of time, multitask, work quickly and efficiently.
7. Must be available for on-call status, as needed, after normal operating hours.
a. Will be available on the Hospital premises within 30 minutes of notification of need.
b. Will notify Hospital personnel of unusual circumstances, which may affect availability.
8. Technology - Embraces technological solutions to work processes and practices.
a. Attends in-services and embraces new technology in department.
b. Become a mentor to department peers in use of new equipment.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education
Two (2) years of specialized training equivalent to an Associate's degree at an approved school of radiological technology.
Required Licenses / Registrations
RT - MA - Radiologic Technologist (Massachusetts)
ARRT Radiography Registration
Required Classes/Skills -
BLS - Basic Life Support
Required additional Knowledge, and Abilities
Employees must produce their CEU records to their manager prior to start date and on an ongoing basis thereafter. Technologists in this position are responsible to maintain CEU activity on-site for a period of two years longer than the technologist's last licensure renewal date.
Part time hours available; including call (every 5th weekend and 1 weekday)
