Job description

Garden Plain High School: Interpreter/Intervener
Candidate will work with a deaf/blind High School student.
The Interpreter/Intervener supports the instructional program with specific responsibilities for working with deaf-blind students; facilitating communication and learning for deaf-blind students using tactile signing, object symbols, tactile symbols, braille, etc.; assisting in the instruction or supervision of deaf-blind students; and serving as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with deaf-blind persons.
A Day in the Life
  • Adapts classroom work and assessments under the direction of the teacher to support and reinforce instruction for assigned students.
  • Administers first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g. tube feeding, toileting, diapering, etc.) ensuring care for assigned students while working under supervision.
  • Attends a variety of activities (e.g. field trips, extracurricular activities, sporting events, etc.) to provide interpretation for the student and students participating.
  • Creates, under the direction of the licensed staff member, curriculum materials for the purpose of providing a hands-on multisensory approach to learning.
  • Instructs deaf-blind students, while under the supervision of the teacher supporting the implementation of IEP goals and improving student success.
  • Maintains inventory of materials (e.g. object symbols, tactile symbols, etc.) to ensure availability of items needed for communication.
  • Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual records (e.g. binder of object symbols, tactile symbols, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and providing reliable information.
  • Maintains documents, files, and records (e.g. anecdotal written observations, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to students and staff in developing recommendations.
  • Monitors students to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. workshops, in-services, staff meetings, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Provides teachers with input to support the evaluation of student progress.
  • Rides the bus, as needed, with students to and from school to provide interpretation services.
  • Translates communications (e.g. teacher to student, student to teacher, student to parent, etc.) to assist students, teachers, and parents with communication.
  • Interprets in meetings and activities with hearing impaired individuals to provide communication between voice to sign and sign to voice.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Successful Candidates:
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and software applications.
  • Ability to operate equipment used in instructional media machines and specialized equipment for the hearing impaired.
  • Knowledge of basic math including calculations using fractions, percentiles, and/or ratios.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of student behavior management strategies and techniques.
  • Knowledge of ASL or other manual communication language ASL and a multisensory approach to learning is preferred but not required. Training is provided.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and patience and to use active listening skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Ability to solve problems and analyze issues and create action plans.
  • Ability to establish and maintain constructive relationships.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities and to remain flexible and creative.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision and as part of a team.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Some sign language experience preferred but not required.
  • Driver's License and Evidence of Insurability
  • Job-related experience is desired but not required.
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance/punctuality as required by the Board of Education policies and regulations.
  • Must be regularly available and willing to work 37.5 hours per week, or such other hours as the district determines necessary or desired.
  • Consider certification through Utah State University

Working Environment
  • This position generally requires the following physical demands: lifting and transferring up to approximately pounds, some pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity.
  • Generally the job requires 45% sitting, 10% walking, and 45% standing.
