This is an excellent opportunity for Engineering students to learn how a culvert's condition impacts drainage and pavement performance over time.
For GIS majors, it is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience collecting field data using ESRI products which are used as part of a highway agency's asset management system.
How You Will Make an Impact
On a typical day, the two person team will depart from the Highway Department and survey 7 to 11 miles of road per day gathering inventory data on all culverts crossing under the main-line highways. Such data includes pipe size, shape, material, and defects such as percent full (of sediment), joint separation, undermining, cave-ins, vegetative growth, etc.
This information will be put into the County's ArcGIS system which is updated live through the use of an Apple iPad and Collector for ArcGIS. Training in the use of the iPad and assessing culverts will be provided. In case of inclement weather, other duties may include sweeping the shop, cleaning windows, mowing around the grounds, etc.
