Job description

The Office of Global Engagement at Utah State University invites applications for an International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) Coordinator and Advisor (Program Coordinator I). This position serves as Designated School Official (F-visa) and Alternate Responsible Officer (J-visa), which require being a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States.

 

As Coordinator, this position manages International Student and scholar data, coordinates logistics for workshops/events, and provides basic DSO/ARO services, but does not serve as a primary immigration advisor.

 

As Advisor, this position advocates for and assists International Students, advises the International Student Council and other International Student organizations.

 

This position is eligible for hybrid work within the state of Utah.


Designated School Official/Alternate Responsible Officer (40%)

  • Coordinate the transfer of information between the federal Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and USU’s non-immigrant database (Terra Dotta ISSS and Scholar Portals)
  • Generate Forms I-20/DS-2019, provide travel signatures, and issue Employment Authorization Verification letters for International Students and scholars

Program Coordination (10%)

  • Generate and manage data and reports from various systems to support primary immigration advisors
  • Coordinate logistics for workshops, such as Optional Practical Training, Curricular Practical Training, etc
  • Assist the Fulbright Program Adviser, including coordinating the Fulbright U.S. Student Program campus committee evaluation process, connecting Fulbright Foreign Student Program grantees with academic units, promoting Fulbright opportunities, and guiding potential applicants to resources

International Student Advising (50%)

  • Assist International Students and scholars in utilizing the ISSS and Scholars Portals
  • Monitor/respond to emails sent to internationalstudents@usu.edu
  • Advise the International Student Council and other International Student organizations, including assisting with training of student leaders, and attending meetings and events
  • Assist students in the planning, implementation, and marketing of International Student activities and events
  • Advocate for and assist International Students experiencing culture shock, isolation, and other challenges

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States
  • Associate degree plus two years of related work experience; or a bachelor’s degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required. 
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent written communication skills in English

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience living abroad
  • Experience working with International Students or cross-cultural exchange
  • Experience with database and records management
  • Experience with Terra Dotta International Students and Scholars or similar software

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of federal regulations affecting non-immigrant students
  • Competency in maintaining confidential information
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including adeptness in relating easily, effectively and equitably with students from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments
  • Ability to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events
  • Skilled in the use of personal computers and related software applications
  • Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities
  • Skilled at records maintenance
  • Ability to lead and train staff and/or students
  • Ability to interact with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment
  • Knowledge of communication principles, media, and marketing techniques
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports
  • Program specific knowledge, skills, and abilities as described in recruitment notice
  • Ability to exercise a high level of creativity, decision making, problem solving, and discretion as work is varied and may be undefined

Minimum $38,000 at 100% time (40 hours per week); Commensurate with experience, plus excellent benefits

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
