Position OverviewThe chairperson provides leadership and oversight for all teaching, research, service, administrative, and outreach activities within the department. In addition, the chairperson fulfills teaching, research, and service responsibilities as a faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
This position is open to internal faculty members in the KU College of Liberal Arts & Sciences only.
This position reports to, and serves at the pleasure of, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Salary

Academic-year salary, plus an administrative supplement and summer salary, as determined by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
Term
Term of 5 years, with possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance and mutual willingness to continue for an additional 5 years as determined by the Executive Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
Job DescriptionDuties and Responsibilities

Chairperson of Anthropology (0.5 FTE)

1. Provides oversight and leadership and directly assists faculty in the execution of all departmental activities, including education, research, service, and outreach in accordance with department bylaws.
2. Provides oversight and leadership of departmental initiatives and activities involving diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
3. In consultation with unit governance and faculty, reviews and modifies the long-range planning for the department as it concerns its curriculum, faculty support, students, outreach, and fund-raising.
4. Oversees all internal budgetary, administrative, and personnel matters and reports to necessary administrative units and to the department faculty.
5. Oversees the undergraduate and graduate academic programs of the unit, including assignment of teaching duties and ensuring an equitable distribution of teaching assignments among faculty members in accordance with the teaching assignment policy of the College.
6. Works with the University Space Management Office (for non-research related activities) and the University Research Space Management Committee (for research-related activities) to determine appropriate and equitable allocation of space.
7. Supervises and reviews the unit's faculty and professional, academic, and University support staff, and supports faculty and staff development.
8. Seeks enhancement of all unit resources by actively seeking external funding.
9. Develops and enhances research and educational relationships between the department and other units within the University, as well as with public and private agencies outside the University.
10. Develops long-term planning for future leadership by cultivating/mentoring future faculty members.
11. Executes College and University policies in the unit effectively.
12. Represents the Department in reporting to the College and other University entities.

Faculty Member (0.5 FTE)

20% Teaching

  1. Teaches 2 3-credit hour courses per year (or the equivalent) in field of specialty.
  2. Mentors graduate and/or undergraduate students in research.
  3. Supervises graduate teaching assistants, as assigned.
  4. Serves on graduate student committees that supervise and evaluate progress toward degree completion.

20% Research

1. Engages in scholarly research, including publishing appropriate peer-reviewed research, and presenting research at professional conferences on a regular basis.

10% Service

1. Provides general service to the department, the College, the University, and to the academic profession.
Required QualificationsThis position is open to KU Tenured faculty members only.
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experience in letter of application/statement of interest and (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in c.v.
  1. Tenured appointment with the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor in the Department of Anthropology.
  2. Demonstrated ability to serve as an academic leader and team builder, developing and enhancing research and educational relationships among faculty and between the unit and its affiliated units.
  3. Teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and commitment to teaching excellence.
  4. Strong record of scholarly achievement, as evidenced by an established program of research with the promise of continued productivity.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary and international studies in teaching, research, and service.
  6. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and to manage interpersonal relations, as evidence by application materials.
  7. Commitment to enhancing and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
  8. Experience in seeking outside funding and managing multiple projects.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. tenured appointment with the rank of Full Professor in the Department of Anthropology.
  2. Demonstrated excellence in administrative and management skills.
  3. Experience with KU and KU Office of Research administrative procedures.
