The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.


As an accessibility intern, you will participate in the digital accessibility practice at the American Heart Association on the accessibility compliance team. Your responsibilities will be to help ensure the delivery of robust, high-quality, and fully accessible digital projects. You will help us execute and refine our accessibility strategies and test procedures. Accessibility is key to upholding our core values of inclusion and for ensuring innovative and improved digital experiences.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 5/20/24 – 8/9/24
  • Location: Remote position
  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management.
  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.
Responsibilities:

Tasks could include things like the following:

  • Audit and elevate accessibility best practices throughout AHA and its vendors, recommending refinements and providing documentation.
  • Assist designers and developers on best practices for providing accessible solutions.
  • Consult with web engineers to ensure they uphold quality, accessible experiences beyond product launch and initial compliance milestones.
  • Identify components and patterns for accessibility refinement and prioritization.
  • Help triage and prioritize accessibility issues and help with remediation.
  • Work collaboratively to develop companywide accessibility standards and an accessibility program roadmap.

Qualifications:
  • One to three years of experience or college-level training with accessibility in digital, customer-facing programs or functions.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of technologies:
    • PDF accessibility and other digital document standards
    • Web accessibility on various platforms including Windows and MacOS
    • Mobile accessibility on various platforms, including Android and iOS is a plus
    • Experience with video captioning is a plus
  • Working proficiency and development skills in a minimum of one platform:
    • Web development – semantic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WAI-ARIA
    • Native app development (iOS and/or Android) is a plus
  • Knowledge of digital assistive technologies (screen readers, Zoom, voice, etc.)
  • Familiarity with tools for automated and guided accessibility testing.
  • Ability to interact professionally in a corporate, non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding communications and projects from inception through completion
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Excellence in teamwork, collaboration, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
  • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection
  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
Compensation & Benefits:

The salary for this position is $23 per hour. The job application window is expected to close April 12, 2024.
