What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Summer - Technical Undergraduate intern studying engineering to join our dynamic team! The Building and Fire Safety department is responsible for development and execution of the corporate fire protection program. Our team consists of operations engineers, systems engineers, system technologists and Fire protection specialists. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable and/or interested in learning about the field of fire protection engineering.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Learn about different aspects of the Fire Protection program.
  • Assist Fire Protection Engineers in the implementation and execution of performance-based solutions to fire protection issues.
  • Research emerging technologies that pose a fire risk..
  • Support Fire Protection Engineers in project design and construction document review activities.
  • Assist in development of Design Standards and Specifications.
  • Support records management and continuous improvement of safety related processes and procedures.
  • Use fire modeling and egress modeling software to perform system analysis.
  • Assist engineers in the implementation and utilization of a new safety management IT platform.
  • Conduct field walkthroughs and update system asset information.
  • Support field inspections and code deficiency closure verification.
  • Gain exposure to strategic planning and asset management principles for our systems.
  • Assist in reporting to NNSA and DOE.

Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited related undergraduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire
  • Currently pursuing an ABET accredited undergraduate degree program in Fire Protection Engineering/ Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology
  • Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to develop technical ideas and results and present them in oral and written form.
  • Demonstrated abilities to work independently and to succeed as a member of a team.

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
