Job description

The Data Governance Consultant Intern is responsible for supporting the Enterprise-wide data governance program. This position collaborates with data owners, data stewards, and business users across the enterprise on the adoption and ongoing implementation of data governance policies and best practices across the organization. This role supports the efforts of the Stewardship community in conjunction with data governance leadership. This position also partners with others across the Enterprise to determine the appropriate source of record and create business processes.

The Summer College Internship Program is a 10-week, paid internship experience that provides undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to attend development workshops, network, and be part of our company. Our college interns work on meaningful projects, are mentored under their respective managers, and continue to develop throughout the entire summer. In addition, through the internship program, our interns can attend development workshops that are focused on key concepts within the divisional tracks of Information Technology, Actuarial, Analytics & Data, Clinical Studies, web-based Customer Experience, Digital Operations, and other technical based degree programs.

  • This is a paid 10-week summer internship from the first Monday in June to the second Friday in August (up to 40 hours per week).
  • May reside in either a technical or non-technical area
  • Development events are provided to help with the transition from school to the corporate environment.
  • Housing is not provided as part of our program.


Essential Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

Within this role, you will be working on our Enterprise Data Catalog (EDC) and processes which will include: Managing Request & Workflow including desk level procedures, creating documentation and communication materials for stakeholders, coordinating and setting agendas for meetings/ or discussions as needed to complete resource scan configuration, an creating and validating configuration and input files for EDC.

Analytics & Data Specific:

  • Works with a mentor from a specific Analytics & Data discipline which ranges from Data Management & Integration (Data Warehousing & Big Data), Analytics & Reporting (Business Intelligence, Analytics, and Data Science), and Data Governance (Data Profiling).
  • Depending on the discipline the intern may assist with the following:

    • Assists with Big Data on network performance, using tools to manipulate diverse real-world data and develop complex data visualizations; use data-driven metrics to create visibility into network performance, to mine data, and solve problems.
    • Assists with predictive modelling, forecasting, and Data Science related tasks.
    • Conduct data profiling analyses to ensure data quality.
    • Develop reporting, analysis, and dashboards using Microsoft Power BI, Cognos, SAS, R, Python, or possibly other analytical tools as necessary.

  • Works with a technical mentor and provides support to key strategic projects.
  • Responsible for work assignments and possible responsibilities that vary according to business need and departmental opportunities, in addition to student's qualifications
  • Duties will vary with assignment, specific divisional callouts are listed below
  • Functions performed are technical in nature and will cover a broad range of business-related projects
  • Creates and delivers presentation at completion of internship

Minimum Qualifications:

Our ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, good communication skills (written and verbal), and be comfortable in a collaborative environment.

Desired majors include: Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Informational Technology,

General Technical:

  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interface with staff at all levels of the company.
  • Experience using a desktop computer in a professional environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proactive approach to work, displaying creativity and flexibility in completing their assigned tasks.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement of their own skill and team functioning.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently, as well as on intra- and inter- departmental teams where needed.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work at a computer for two or more hours at a time.
  • Ability to use a phone and/or TTD as needed.
