Position:Director of International Student Services (One Year Coverage)

Department: Upper School - Department of Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ)

Location: Milton Academy Campus, Milton, MA

Full-time (Sabbatical Leave)

FLSA: Exempt

Milton Academy is an independent college preparatory K–12 school, boarding and day in grades 9–12, located just outside of Boston.

Summary of Position:

Milton Academy is seeking a full-time Upper School Director of International Student Services, a member of the Department of Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) and the Deans Team. It has a dual report to the Upper School Director of Equity and Inclusion and the Upper School Dean of Students. This is a 12-month staff position for the 2024-25 school year beginning July 1, 2024.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

This position contributes to Milton Academy’s Upper School in the following ways:

  • Bring a team-oriented, collaborative approach to meetings to design and implement the DEIJ’s immediate and long-term plans and assist in the development of orientation programs for new International Students, and in coordination with those for students of color, new students, and families.
  • Collaborate with other members of the DEIJ team to manage the student DEIJ Board/assigned subcommittee.
  • Support student affinity groups, publications, and culture clubs related to International Students, including serving as Faculty Advisor for International Students Club.
  • Plan Monthly activities for the International Student Community.
  • Cultivate a communications plan for open interaction with all current international families, including interpretation services. Share this plan in writing with the Upper School Director of Equity and Inclusion and the Dean of Students.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with the advisors of International Students on ways to support them (including but not limited to) medical appointments, making travel arrangements, academic assistance, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Director of residential life and house heads to effectively support International Students within the boarding community.
  • Manage host family program; identify and coordinate local families who wish to host International Students over breaks.
  • Facilitate campus arrival and departure of International Students for opening of school, school breaks, and the end of the school year in coordination with the Deans’ office and the Director of residential life.
  • Collaborate with the Director of residential life with housing assignments for new students.
  • Develop and maintain a shared system of tracking expenses for approved International Student programming with the Upper School Director of Equity and Inclusion and Upper School Dean of Students, and comply with Business Office budget and reimbursement policies.
  • Attend DEIJ team meetings, House Head meetings, and Deans Team meetings, as well as one-on-one meetings with supervisors.
  • Chaperone International Student day trips to conferences or outings organized for students staying on long holidays.
  • Serve as a resource for parents and guardians of International Students, including but not limited to participating in online and in-person parent information sessions.
  • Some evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Upper School Director of Equity and Inclusion and Upper School Dean of Students.

  • Abide by the school’s policies and procedures as outlined in the provided handbooks.
  • Communicate with the appropriate supervisor when unable to meet any professional obligation.

Supervision to be received: Supervised by the Upper School Director of Equity and Inclusion and Dean of Students.

Supervision to be exercised: None.

Education/Certification/Licensure

Required: A bachelor’s degree in student life, international studies, diversity, equity, and inclusion or a related field

Preferred: A master’s degree in student life, international studies, diversity, equity, and inclusion or a related field

Experience

Required: Experience in teaching and creating curriculum in diversity

Preferred: Experience working in an independent boarding/day school

Competencies

Required:

  • Proficiency in diversity, equity, and inclusion curriculum creation and instruction.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, including GoogleSuite, Microsoft Word, and Adobe.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and related issues.
  • Receptive to supervision and professional development.
  • Desire to be a part of a dynamic educational community.

Physical Abilities

Required:

  • Must be able to work at a computer for up to 8 hours each day in conjunction with OSHA requirements.
  • Must be able to teach in a classroom setting and use relevant instructional technology.
  • Must be able to move around the Milton Academy campus without restriction.
