We grow 35 acres of 40 different vegetables. There are 2 acres of intensive summer crops and the rest is located on a larger field as part of our crop rotation. Those vegetables are mostly storage crops and are a big part of our winter sale distribution.
The intensive Grower Assistant will be helping to take care of growing our 2 acre summer vegetables, 2 greenhouses and helping with coordinating harvest. This position requires, 1-2 years experience of vegetable production.
The ideal applicant would be passionate about local food systems, enjoy training and leading the work of others, uphold and communicate about quality standards.
Responsibilities:
- Cultivate and care for plants in a greenhouse or outdoor farm setting
- Monitor and maintain optimal growing conditions, including temperature, humidity, and light levels
- Irrigate plants as needed and ensure proper drainage
- Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and other treatments to promote plant health
- Prune and trim plants to encourage growth and maintain desired shape
- Harvest crops at the appropriate time to ensure quality and maximize yield
- Record data on plant growth, yields, and environmental conditions for analysis
Experience:
- Previous experience in a similar role as a grower or gardener is preferred
- Knowledge of plant biology and growth cycles
- Familiarity with greenhouse operations and equipment
- Ability to operate hand tools and machinery used in plant cultivation
- Physical stamina to perform tasks such as heavy lifting and prolonged standing
Skills:
- Mechanical knowledge for operating greenhouse equipment
- Understanding of garden or landscape design principles
- Proficiency in data collection and record keeping
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
