Position Overview: St. John's Community Health's Legal Services Program is seeking a motivated and compassionate Intake Attorney to join our team on a grant-based position until December 31, 2024. The Intake Attorney will play a pivotal role in promoting our estate planning services through outreach efforts, coordination of events, and client engagement. This position offers an excellent opportunity for recently licensed attorneys to gain valuable experience in a public interest legal setting while making a meaningful impact on marginalized and trauma-experienced community members.

This position is grant funded. The grant is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2024 (there is an opportunity to extend 6 months). The grant may or may not be funded again after that date. Your employment beyond the grant expiration date is not guaranteed. Should the grant not be funded, you are eligible and encouraged to apply for another position within the agency.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs a combination, but not necessarily all, of the following duties:

  • Outreach and Promotion: Conduct outreach activities throughout LA County, to raise awareness of our legal services, with a primary focus on estate planning services.
  • Event Coordination: Plan, coordinate, and attend multiple outreach events to connect with the community and potential clients.
  • Client Engagement: Assist individuals seeking legal assistance, gather relevant information, and facilitate initial consultations with our legal team.
  • Intakes: Perform intakes in-person and by phone for potential clients seeking pro bono estate planning services as well as do initial intakes for patients of St John’s seeking legal services and coordinate meeting times with other attorneys.
  • Bilingual Support: Provide Spanish language support to clients and assist other attorneys in client interactions and document preparation.
  • Legal Expertise: While the primary focus is on estate planning, assistance with other areas of law, such as immigration, family law, and other public interest legal issues, as needed is a plus.
  • Continuous Learning: Be willing to learn and adapt to new areas of law and stay updated on relevant legal developments.
  • Attorney Support: Assist other attorneys with client work, translating documents, interpretation, preparing documents, maintaining files, obtaining information/documents from clients, assisting clients with obtaining documents, doing legal research, and taking on your own client case load as you grow and learn. Maintaining client statistics for grant reporting.
  • Self-Starter Skills: Demonstrate initiative and self-motivation in carrying out outreach activities and engaging with community members.
  • Community-Centered Approach: Interact with marginalized and trauma-experienced diverse community members with sensitivity, empathy, and respect.
  • Notary License: Possess a notary license or the ability to obtain one during employment (required).
  • Office Support: Maintaining up to date referral lists, supporting with administrative duties such as but not limited to ordering office supplies, submitting requisitions for materials/supplies, drafting marketing materials, and managing incoming mail.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No supervisory responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active California Bar membership in good standing.
  • Fluency in Spanish is required to effectively communicate with the target community. Asian language skills are a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills: Ability to engage with diverse community members and convey complex legal concepts in an understandable manner.
  • Commitment to public interest law: Passion for serving vulnerable populations and promoting social justice.
  • Experience in other areas of law: Experience within immigration, family law and public interest legal services is a plus.
  • Experience conducting community and/or street outreach, specifically to hard-to-reach populations;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Empathy and compassion for individuals facing legal challenges and a commitment to providing high-quality services.
  • Flexibility to travel to various outreach locations and work occasional evenings or weekends is required.
  • Experience in estate planning is beneficial, but not required.
  • Proficiency in legal research, document preparation, and case management software is necessary.
  • Knowledge of community resources and experience in community outreach is beneficial.
  • Experience working in underserved communities such as undocumented workers, unaccompanied minors, LGBT populations, communities of color, youth/adolescents, and those experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, and/or mental illness.

  • Recently licensed attorneys with less than 2 years’ experience are encouraged to apply.
