Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Intake Counselor is responsible for maintaining an effective system for intake services that includes responding to clinical inquiry, screening participants for program eligibility and conducting biopsychosocial assessments to determine the appropriate level of care based on ASAM criteria. Intake counselor is responsible for completing all required admission paperwork and assures compliance with all applicable substance use treatment laws, codes, rules and regulations. Maintains all data/records regarding the intake and admission process and follows all policies/procedures related to release of information and confidentiality. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team regarding admissions, coordination of care with clinic physician, counselor assignment, and other tasks as needed.
Intake Counselor Responsibilities:
- Primary functions include coordinating the screening and admission process, conducting intake screening, and completing bio-psychosocial assessments on potential NEXA participants.
- Coordinate the screening, referral, and admission process for potential participants to include the following:
- Respond to referral calls and provide appropriate external referrals, as needed.
- Manage the waiting lists for various programs
- Review referral packets
- Conduct screening and intake interviews
- Schedule and coordinate needed assessments
- Report observations, findings, and needs to counselors and appropriate case manager to ensure staff is aware of services needed by individual served
- Contact referral and collateral sources as needed.
- Attend agency and outside trainings for maintenance, enhancement of knowledge and skills.
- Maintain accurate records on participants served.
- Assign participants to group and schedule their first sessions.
- Make appropriate referrals for ineligible participants.
- Input appropriate data into computer system.
- Conduct individual sessions and/or group counseling groups as necessary
- Review and close cases as necessary.
- Adhere to professional standards of ethics.
- Participate in team meetings, and in agency fundraising efforts.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills; Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Computer proficiency, including the ability to use email, navigate and enter notes into electronic medical health records and working knowledge of pertinent software.
- Bilingual/ bicultural preferred (Spanish/ English).
- Must be sensitive and aware of current issues in the field of substance abuse.
- Must be culturally sensitive.
- Possession of valid Illinois driver’s license and willingness to use personal vehicle in course of employment if needed.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human Services or related field, from a regionally accredited educational institution which has U.S. Department of Education approval preferred.
- Must have certification as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor from the Illinois Alcoholism and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association (IAODAPCA).
- Must have a minimum 3 years of experience working with individuals who experience substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, and mental health disorders.
- Must have the clinical skills necessary to identify and assess problems related to or attributable to substance use disorders.
