The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is an Instructor credentialed and privileged as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) (in a respective Specialty area; i.e., Nurse Practitioner (NP), Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)). The APP is a member of the OHSU Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws. The APP shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The APP is expected to comply with scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APN or NP) will work in collaboration with the bariatric surgeons and medical weight loss bariatrician to see patients within the Bariatric practice. The Instructor is supported by the Bariatric surgeons and the Division Head of Bariatrics.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a key member of a multi-disciplinary patient care team, which includes physicians who represent both medical and surgical disciplines, residents, nurses, dieticians, and other clinical and business support staff. The provider will be responsible for program development alongside the Program Director. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides direct advanced practice nursing care for patients who experience weight management issues. They assess patient and family needs medically, pre- operatively, and when medical weigh loss intervention is necessary, post- operatively. They develop a plan of care, implement and evaluate the care delivered. The Nurse Practitioner serves as caregiver for patients enrolling in medical weight loss management. They act as a communication link between the referring providers, patient, their family, and the care team. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a continuous advocate for patients and their families. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) practices in accord with professional standards, core values, and with a commitment to service excellence. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) reports to the Division Head and Medical Weight Loss Management Program Director. They support and have a collegial relationship with the health care providers and staff within the DHC.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provides leadership and development of the Medical Weight Loss Management Program. Coordination of medical specialty teams necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for referral, education, and care pathways for patients.
- Provides comprehensive patient care plans in the outpatient area, virtual or in person visits, surgical and medical patients. Participate in direct care, performing diagnostic/therapeutic assessment and interpretation in tandem with attending physicians. Prescribes medications, treatments, and therapy and medical equipment. Conducts patient education when working to manage chronic illness and wellness care. Must document patient care in a clear and concise manner within EPIC.
- Provides same day response to medical advice/prescription phone requests and coordinating patient services with outpatient staff and other departmental staff. Ability to recognize emergency or urgent situations and acting immediately and effectively to provide emergency resuscitation and/or treatment.
- Patient education: Responsible for patient education with patients and families both in the clinic and via phone encounters.
- Education: Collaborates in education with residents, fellows, and medical students related to colorectal surgery and care. Will be a valued member of colorectal service conferences and meetings.
- Provides communication to both internal and external customers (patients, referring providers, insurance carriers, internal providers, and other OHSU faculty and staff) that meets or exceeds the service standards for the health care industry. This duty includes prompt and professional communication efforts, face-to-face customer contact skills, crisis management, use of available information technology, standard complaint processing, flexibility in coverage of internal service needs, and continuous application of process improvement methods and skills.
National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Oregon
Specialty training in Medical Weight Loss Management
Current BLS Certification (ACLS a plus)

- Master’s Degree as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role.
