Overview
University Instructors (UI) is seeking dynamic face-to-face Instructional Assistants with a passion for supporting students in grades PreK-5th Grade for the 2023-2024 school year. In this role, you'll work in schools to directly help students overcome various learning and behavioral challenges. The start date for these positions is August 2023.

Responsibilities
Roles and Responsibilities
In this role, you'll:
  • Work with children in the Exceptional Education program that who have been identified as having either/or both:
    • LBD (Learning and Behavioral Disorders)
    • MSD (Moderate and Severe Disabilities)
  • Work in a self-contained classroom with Exceptional Children in grades PreK-5th Grade who may have moderate to severe physical or mental disabilities.
  • Read, understand, and assist in implementing, recording, and monitoring students' individual education plans.
  • Assist with the implementation, recording, and monitoring of students' behavior management programs.
  • Assist with toileting, changing children, and emotionally supporting children.
  • Communicate and engage with students and school staff in a friendly, effective, and professional manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records/information.
  • Respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Provides bus monitor support as needed which includes riding the bus with students, supporting bus drivers with supervision, loading/unloading students, pickup/delivery of students from/to parents/guardians/authorized individuals, and following state transportation guidelines.
  • Adhere to medical precautions when assisting with positioning, lifting, or carrying students when applicable to specific categorical programs/classrooms.
  • Model and reinforce positive and age-appropriate social behavior when applicable to specific categorical programs/classrooms.
  • Follow UI and partner district guidelines for appropriate procedures based on the School Health Handbook (e.g., handling and disposing of bodily fluids, assisting in lifting, transferring, evacuating, and/or transporting students) when applicable to specific categorical programs/classrooms.
  • Assist in loading and unloading students onto and off regular and lift buses when applicable to specific categorical programs/classrooms.
  • Demonstrate willingness to attend to basic student personal care/hygiene when applicable to specific categorical programs/classrooms.
  • Assist with specific instructional techniques (e.g., cued speech, signing, community-based education) when applicable to specific categorical programs/classrooms.
  • Assist with the set-up, operation, and maintenance of assistive/prosthetic devices when applicable to specific categorical programs/classrooms.
  • Assist with use of equipment needed to meet instructional needs (e.g., braces, PAL machines, auditory trainers, speech devices, computers, typewriters, magnifiers, braille writers, closed circuit television systems) when applicable to specific categorical programs/classrooms.
  • Assist with the operation and use of medically prescribed equipment (e.g., ventilators, suctioning devices, or hearing aids) when applicable to specific categorical school programs.
  • Assist with paperwork and recordkeeping.
  • Assist with the operation, use, and maintenance of classroom materials and equipment.
  • Perform health services, if needed, for which training will be provided.
  • Complete all training and compliance requirements as assigned by designated deadlines.Bridge communications between students and teachers regarding specific course content.
  • Communicate with UI program management on specific questions regarding relevant course content.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:
  • Willingness and aptitude to work with students with disabilities.
  • Physical ability and willingness to assist with physical needs of students such as positioning, toileting, and lifting.
  • Willingness to attend UI and district partner's in-service programs for professional growth and adhere to guidance provided during trainings.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work across multiple subject areas.
  • Strong ability to work both independently with little supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.

Qualifications
Education and Work Experience
As a successful applicant, you must have a passion for helping students succeed. Additionally, you will need to have the following:
  • Hold an Associate Degree or equivalent college credit (i.e., 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours).
  • Be local to the area and able to reliably commute to your assigned work site(s) .
  • Experience working with students who are identified as LBD or MSD, preferred.

Compensation
$20-$25/hour
