The Infection Preventionist oversees the prevention of infection and serves as a consultant, educator, role model, researcher and change agent for infection control and prevention across the organization.

- Serves as a subject matter expert for a designated area of responsibility for surveillance and epidemiological investigations.
- Applies and expands surveillance principles, uses complex display tools such as control charts.
- Conducts basic cluster and epidemic investigations, interprets results using statistics, rates, and ratios, and knows what benchmarks to use.
- Ensures the Infection Prevention aspects of the Environment of Care are met. Recognizes and monitors elements important for a safe care environment and collaborates on the evaluation and monitoring of environmental cleaning, disinfection, sterilization practices, and technology.
- Assists in the education of new and existing staff, both internal and external to the department.
- Reviews existing policies and strategies, develops new policies and control strategies as needed, for preventing and controlling the transmission of infectious agents.
- Collaborates with Employee Health to evaluate Infection Prevention data and to provide recommendations, including work-restriction, workplace exposures and assessment of risk for occupational exposure to infectious disease.
- Collaborates with Emergency Preparedness to prepare to respond to an influx of potentially infectious patients.
- Collaborates with Public Health as required by the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) and to detect and control new and emerging organisms, agents of bioterrorism, and mass biological events.
Certifications: Must obtain the Certification in Infection Control (CIC) once all eligibility requirements have been met as stated on the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC) website. Certification should be attained within three years of joining the department.
Skills: MS Office
Experience: Previous experience in infection control or a pediatric setting, preferred.
