Summary Statement
Water Renewal Services is the utility that cleans 30 million gallons of used water every day, from our homes and businesses - keeping our city clean and safe. The West Boise Water Renewal Facility is currently accepting applications for the position of Industrial Mechanic I
This position performs skilled maintenance on a variety of complex mechanical systems in advanced water renewal (wastewater treatment) facilities and other public works utilities.
  • Installs, operates, repairs and troubleshoots industrial equipment
  • Operates and maintains light, medium, and heavy equipment
  • Work is performed under general oversight and requires independent judgment and initiative

Essential Functions
  • Performs corrective and preventive mechanical maintenance, repair, replacement, installation, and operation of wastewater process equipment. Repairs, modifies, and rebuilds worn or damaged equipment. Performs complex mechanical troubleshooting, repairs, rebuilding, installation, pipe fitting, plumbing, welding, and fabrication. Operates light, medium, and heavy hand, pneumatic and electric tools, chain pull hoists, power saws, forklifts and overhead cranes. Fabricates, welds, and cuts parts and accessories utilizing welders, torches, and a wide array of hand and power tools. (70%)
  • Utilizes computer programs to enter data and create maintenance records to ensure compliance with local, state and federal rules, regulations and laws. Reads and interprets blueprints and technical manuals to research and order parts and equipment. (20%)
  • Attends and completes assigned training as required to ensure compliance with city policy, state and federal regulations and maintain professional licensing and certification. Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work environment. (10%)

Requirements
Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • 2 years' experience troubleshooting, repairing, rebuilding, installing, fitting pipe, plumbing and fabricating in a maintenance or industrial setting, and
  • High school diploma or GED, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience
    Working knowledge of :
  • Engines, pumps, valves, compressors, electrical circuits and process instrumentation
  • Low and high voltage electrical systems
  • Occupational safety standards and hazards
  • Pipefitting, welding and fabricating practices along with shop geometry, and related tools and equipment
  • Hazards associated with industrial maintenance
  • National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
    Ability to:
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, utilize a computer and basic computer programs
  • Interpret and apply SDS (safety data sheets) data and other safety procedures
  • Maintain state and city required licenses and certificates
  • Operate arc and MIG welders, and oxyacetylene torches
  • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of city employees, the general public and other organizations
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion
  • Understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance
  • Perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation
  • Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record
    Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • 5 years' maintenance experience in a class IV advanced water renewal (wastewater treatment) facility or industrial setting, or
  • A formal degree in maintenance management and practices, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Wastewater Treatment Operator Class II or higher license
    Licensing And Other Requirements
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to obtain a Wastewater Treatment Operator Class I certificate or Operator in Training (OIT) within six months of employment

Physical EffortsWhile performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, frequently pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate and rarely very loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity. Additional physical efforts include: twisting, bending and and operating machinery in confined areas.
Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Employees work on stairs and uneven surfaces, near open tanks and ditches, in industrial areas; are exposed to hydraulic and vehicle hazards, and insects and atmospheric hazards; are subject to slip hazards caused from ice/snow in winter, wet floors, uneven and undeveloped work surfaces. Exposure to sewage, methane, hydrogen sulfide and other possible toxic gases and hazardous chemicals and substances.
This position works: Shift work, rotating on-call schedule, and reports to the facility in times or emergencies, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as required. Work may be performed/assigned at any of the city's public works' facilities. May work at remote or isolated facilities a considerable distance from supporting resources.
