JOB DUTIES:
Are you an industrial hygienist or safety professional looking for a challenging position that will allow you to travel throughout Montana? If conducting assessments of working conditions for the prevention of occupational disease and workplace hazards interests you, then consider joining our Safety Bureau in the Employment Standards Division as our next Industrial Hygienist/Occupational Safety Health Specialist.
As an Industrial Hygienist/Occupational Safety Health Specialist you will:
  • Conduct onsite workplace assessment to identify safety and health hazards and provide recommendations to control and eliminate them.
  • Review employer safety and health programs and evaluate their safety and health management system.
  • Conduct employee sampling to determine workplace exposures.
  • Provide safety and health training to a variety of industries.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITES:
If you are the right person for this opportunity, you will have the following:
  • Occupational health and safety hazards and the ability to recognize these hazards in the workplace.
  • Chemistry, physics and engineering math and the use of industrial hygiene techniques and equipment.
  • OSHA standards and Montana Safety Culture Act requirements.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in occupational safety and health and applies substantive knowledge of technical areas (e.g., electrical, machine guarding, hazardous materials, industrial toxicology, ergonomics, ventilation, fall protection, noise, and respiratory protection)
  • Knowledge of air sampling instruments, direct reading equipment, interpretation of data, and principles in workplace controls
  • Use of computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, internet search engines, photo managers, etc.
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing.
  • Identify and evaluate occupational health hazards to make sound decisions for corrective action to eliminate or control these hazards.
  • Effectively communicate and maintain current knowledge of occupational safety and health principles, practices, and developments.
  • Ability to work independently, teams, prioritize tasks, and meet set deadlines.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
Travel throughout the state using a state issued vehicle is required. You MUST have a valid driver's license and meet the criteria of the State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy. Travel is approximately 25% of the time.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene or a closely related scientific field.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of directly related qualifying experience. For example: safety/industrial hygiene consultation services.

Preferred:
  • Master's Degree in Industrial Hygiene Safety with experience in safety
  • Health professional designations: Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, etc.
