In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
OR
Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technicology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience GS12: One year of specialized experience which includes providing technical expertise related to the training and guidance related to Occupational Health and applicable Industrial Hygiene principles by performing various duties: 1. providing expertise on a wide range of HTRW related safety and Occupational Health concerns; 2. reviewing and recommending policies and regulations; 3. reviewing technical documents and contractor submitted plans regarding health and safety aspects of site activities; 4. analyzing technical specification submitted for equipment, new construction and modification of existing facilities to ensure compliance with applicable standards and policies; 5. interpreting primary guidelines published in the Federal OSHA Standards, EPA Asbestos and Lead Regulations, applicable State Regulations, USACE and DA Manuals and Directives, and established IH practices and procedures; 6. Recommending unique design approaches to complex problems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Specialized Experience GS11:
I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1. advise on a wide range of HTRW related safety and Occupational Health concerns; 2. review and comment of contractor submitted safety plans followed by site inspection to ensure compliance; 3. evaluating and applying new methods and equipment to the practice of industrial hygiene, particularly in dealing with problems not readily addressed by standard methods.; 4. analyzing technical specification submitted for equipment, new construction and modification of existing facilities to ensure compliance with applicable standards and policies; 5. interpreting primary guidelines published in the Federal OSHA Standards, EPA Asbestos and Lead Regulations, applicable State Regulations, USACE and DA Manuals and Directives, and established IH practices and procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
