Industrial Coatings Chemist

POSITION SUMMARY
The Chemist position is responsible for the development of new coatings systems, resolving problems with existing systems, and modifying existing systems to meet customer needs. This role provides technical assistance to customer, manufacturing, and sales staff. 
RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Facilitating the transition of products from development to manufacturing, coordinate new raw materials implantation
  • Conduct experimental work and analyze results
  • Development of new and modification of existing coating formulations using the appropriate experimental design to meet customer requirements 
  • Conduct tests and experiments in a laboratory environment using both standard and novel test procedures 
  • Accurately interpret data and results, documents, and communicates conclusions with the collaboration team and customers
  • Works closely with existing and new raw material suppliers to evaluate new and or replacement materials
  • Provides support for product formulations with manufacturing and is responsible for establishing testing requirements, specifications, and trouble-shooting assistance
  • Interpret results and perform adjustment calculations to bring batches into required specifications 
  • Provides product and process recommendations as required by sales and customer requests 
  • Collaborate with the sales team to respond to customer requests regarding technical inquiries in a timely manner 
  • Perform routine quality testing on products by following established operating procedures
  • Maintain detailed research and quality control records 
  • Calibrate lab equipment per manufacturer specifications and maintain equipment calibration records 
  • Follow proper safety procedures and utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) 
  • Report equipment deficiencies or malfunctions to the Technical Director
  • Assist on the production floor, as needed 

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or a relevant field preferred, or equivalent work experience
  • 2-4 years’ experience within lab / coatings setting, formulation and industry preferred
  • Ability to meet goals, objectives, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to convey technical data, conclusions, and product recommendations
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and in a team setting
  • Proficient computer skills – Windows Office programs (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Experience with ERP (Sage500) and CRM (Salesforce) software is desirable
  • Knowledge of ISO9001
  • Strong math, time-management, problem solving, and project management skills
  • Ability to travel domestically (5% of time) to current & potential customers, deliver products, attend conferences, trade shows and training seminars
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

A laboratory environment is typical in this position, with regular visits to the warehouse. The noise level is generally moderate. The employee will be required to wear personal protective equipment when performing the primary functions of this job in the lab area/ warehouse (ie: safety glasses, safety toe shoes, disposable gloves, etc.).
