*Note: This a temporary, part-time position with no benefits. Hours may vary, 10-20 weekly, depending on program needs. Must be able to work afternoon/evening and some weekend shifts. Required to work 1-2 overnight weekend trips per year. *

Under the direction of the Inclusion Coordinator, the Inclusion Assistant assists in the planning, implementation, and set up of the inclusion programs and Special Olympics Sports for individuals with disabilities within the Federal Way Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department.
  • Works closely with the coordinator, instructors, coaches and trip leaders to help support activities and daily functions of the Inclusion Programs. Programs include, but are not limited to, arts & crafts, fitness, life-skills, dances, theatre, Special Olympic sports, day and overnight Trips.
  • Collaborates with the Inclusion Coordinator to help plan, set up and organize recreational activities and programs.
  • Assists in purchasing program supplies and collecting paperwork.
  • Aids in the coordination and execution of special events, trips, banquets and dances.
  • Supports the maintenance and organization of recreational equipment and supplies.
  • Helps oversee Special Olympic sports including: basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, bocce, track and field, swimming, golf and bowling; substitute as coach, supervise during tournaments and practices when necessary.
  • Supervises trips with athletes to different tournaments throughout the region.
  • Interacts with participants and their families or caregivers and addresses questions, concerns, and feedback.
  • Uses computer programs regularly (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, Canva) and the department's software management system.
  • Supports the inclusion program by scanning, printing and uploading documents.
  • Substitutes classes when necessary.
  • Assists the Inclusion Coordinator in updating billing invoices and payments.
  • Operates City vehicles including 14 passenger shuttle vans when necessary.
  • Maintains regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Attends staff training and staff meetings.
  • Supports in emergency situations; may be required to perform first aid or emergency care.
  • Preforms related duties as assigned by the Inclusion Coordinator.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (additional education in recreation, special education, recreation therapy or a related field is a plus).
  • Any combination of education and experience working with individuals with disabilities for 2 or more years
  • Prior experience in a recreational or customer service role is preferred.
Licenses and Other Requirements:
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License
Knowledge of:
  • Safety and emergency procedures.
  • Various recreation activities and sports.

Ability to:
  • Work collaboratively with instructors and coaches
  • Use Microsoft Office
  • Pass a background check
  • Display strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Show enthusiasm for the inclusion program
  • Be patient and dedicated to creating an enjoyable and meaningful recreational experience for all participants.
  • Be culturally sensitive and inclusive, recognizing and respecting the diverse backgrounds and needs of participants

Environmental Conditions/Physical Effort:
Employee will be required to travel to a variety of locations to perform work and attend meetings. May include carrying, bending, stooping, squatting, walking, standing, jogging, running throughout shift. Performs medium work exerting up to 30 pounds of force to carry or move objects. Must be adaptable to performing under high stress when confronted with an emergency. Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing-perceiving nature of sounds by ear). May be required to work long hours (12-14 hours) periodically on days of special events.
